Description:
FULL TIME, PERMANENT
Bristol City Council is seeking a skilled Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to join our City Docks team. This hands-on role is essential to the maintenance, operation, and management of Bristol’s historic and modern dock infrastructure. The ideal candidate will apply their technical expertise to ensure safe, continuous service while preserving the harbour’s unique heritage.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
- Problem Solving: Adapt solutions to a mix of aging and modern systems, sometimes requiring custom fabrication.
- Health & Safety: Familiarity with LOLER, PUWER, and IET regulations, ensuring strict adherence to HSE safety standards.
- Communication: Effectively collaborate with team members, contractors, and the public to maintain clear and safe operations.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Experience: Proven track record in mechanical maintenance, ideally within public infrastructure.
- Qualifications: NVQ Level 3+ in relevant area of expertise, ideally including mechanical and hydraulic maintenance engineering.
- Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in asset management systems, safety protocols, and technical documentation.
- Public Interaction: Ability to tactfully engage with the public, prioritising safety and positive relations.

Responsibilities:
- Hands-on Maintenance: Perform essential repairs on hydraulic systems, bridges, gates, and dock machinery. Carrying our routine inspections.
- Maintenance Planning & Supervision: Coordinate and prioritize maintenance with senior staff, working with contractors and team members to meet project deadlines.
- Data Management: Maintain accurate records using the Confirm Asset Management System to support maintenance schedules.
- Procurement: Manage requisitions and ensure timely access to necessary materials and resources.
