Description:
ABOUT THE POSITION
Lethbridge Polytechnic is seeking a dedicated and experienced Mechanical Manager / Chief Engineer to oversee the continuous mechanical operations, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical systems across the institution. This role is crucial in ensuring a safe and efficient environment for students and staff, covering the main campus, housing, and two off-campus facilities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Power Engineer Class 5 or better
- Either Journeyman plumber or Journeyman electrician
- Unrestricted Class 5 driver’s license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in mechanical operations and maintenance
- Strong knowledge of plumbing, air conditioning, air handling, controls, and electrical systems
- Proven ability to supervise and lead a team of journeymen and laborers
- Demonstrated experience in budget management and strategic planning
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Familiarity with Alberta safety regulations and standards for mechanical systems
- Strong computer skills (Windows based) with knowledge of Microsoft Office suite

Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the Mechanical Maintenance Department, including planning and organizing work schedules, assigning duties, and conducting staff performance appraisals
- Ensure the safe and efficient operation of all mechanical systems, including boilers, air handling units, plumbing, heating, and building automation controls
- Schedule and prioritize preventive maintenance, safety, and repair activities
- Respond to heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing issues, analyzing and resolving problems promptly
- Purchase and manage maintenance materials and spare parts inventory
- Oversee mechanical contractors working on site
- Develop and manage departmental budgets, ensuring cost-effective operations
- Implement and enforce policies, procedures, and safety protocols to maintain a secure working environment
- Conduct strategic planning for the department, aligning with the institution’s overall goals and objectives
- Facilitate professional development and training for staff to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Provide technical and functional guidance to staff
- Coordinate with other departments to ensure minimal disruption to the institution’s operations during maintenance and repair activities
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of mechanical systems, recommending and implementing improvements as necessary
Chief Engineer Responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with Alberta’s safety and regulatory standards, including the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA) codes and regulations
- Maintain and operate hot water heating boilers and related equipment, ensuring all safety protocols are followed
- Conduct regular inspections of mechanical systems and equipment to ensure optimal performance and compliance with safety standards
- Manage and oversee the operation of Building Management Systems (BMS) to ensure energy efficiency and optimal performance of mechanical systems
- Develop and implement emergency response plans for mechanical system failures and other related emergencies
- Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs for audit and compliance purposes
- Liaise with regulatory bodies and inspectors to ensure compliance with all relevant safety and operational standards
