Title: Senior Mechanical Engineer
Work Location: Perth based (Balcatta) our Perth offices are located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people
Roster: Monday to Friday
In support of Fortescue’s focus on green energy and our carbon neutrality targets, one of our key initiatives is the production of green iron ore and steel.
Reporting to the R&D Engineering Design Manager, we are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the Research and Development team to develop plant and equipment designs for green iron production, supporting implementation from pilot through commercial scale. Candidates must be able to bring a flexible mindset, challenge traditional thinking, and be prepared to work outside of their comfort zone.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor of Engineering or the equivalent in Mechanical Engineering
- Minimum 8 years industry experience
- Experience in plant design including specification of static and rotating equipment and piping systems
- Experience in slurry systems and/or wet minerals processing highly regarded
- Experience in R&D, commissioning / startup, and pilot plant operation highly regarded
- Experience participating in design reviews and HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA and associated action close out
- Enthusiastic in creating new and unique ideas and strategies
- Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a dynamic team
- Well-developed interpersonal skills in building rapport and maintaining stakeholder relationships.
Responsibilities:
- Lead plant and piping design, supply, construction, commissioning, and testing of pilot and demonstration scale minerals processing facilities
- Define mechanical engineering specifications and then lead mechanical design on portfolio of R&D projects.
- Designing, sizing, and selecting equipment – vessels, heat exchangers, tanks, valves, piping, pumps, etc.
- Evaluate, engage, and manage equipment vendors / technical specialists for supply of components and services including writing scopes of work and ongoing contract management.
- Use of engineering design packages coupled with classical hand analysis to support design and optimization work.
- Participate design/safety review workshops (e.g. HAZOP, FMEA) and uphold Safety and Process Safety principles through inherent safety in design, technical rigour, and appropriate / timely escalation
- Collaborate with multidiscipline R&D team including engineers, scientists, project management, and workshop execution teams.
- Produce and maintain technical and engineering documentation throughout design, prototyping and operation life cycle.
- Ability to work across multiple work fronts in a fast-paced environment and adapt to new requirements to meet aggressive stretch targets.
