Description:

Motion Metrics International is the Center of Excellence in AI of the Weir Group PLC located on the University of British Columbia campus that designs, develops, and deploys advanced monitoring solutions for heavy-duty industries. Our products combine custom-designed rugged hardware and “embedded + cloud-based” software to address some of the most challenging problems in the mining industry by using imaging and other sensor technologies.
We are looking for a champion problem solver to work with our PLM (payload monitoring) Team as they strive to provide unique mining solutions to make the industry more efficient and sustainable. As someone who is passionate for engineering, robotics, and mechatronics you will not be afraid to dive head-long into resolving issues that have never been mapped out before. You are a person who can create your own autonomous structure for work but you can also switch gears and enter a friendly, collaborative, and trust-based environment with the team. While you are an expert in mechatronics design you can also code and you can easily navigate challenges in C++, Python, and/or Matlab.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • You can independently work with sensors through sensing, perception, estimation, and control applications at a senior level and without supervision.
  • You know how to design and develop production-grade autonomous systems including sensing, perception, and control.
  • You have an excellent level of theoretical knowledge in engineering and physics that allows you to creatively attack the problems you face day to day and come up with amazing solutions, on time.
  • Designing motion sensing solutions (INS/GPS/IMU/Accelerometers) is your jam, including frequency analysis and tuning of integrated system level components.
  • Proficient with state estimation, signal processing, and filter design (FIR/IIR/EKF/UKF) for dynamical systems and electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with designing and developing algorithms and software to analyze kinematics and dynamics of electromechanical systems.
  • Experience working with industrial communication protocols: RS232/RS422, CAN/CANOpen, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, Modbus, PROFIBUS/PROFINET.
  • Proficient with programming languages such as C/C++, Matlab, and/or Python.
  • Familiar with developing hardware for sensing and data acquisition solutions including component and/or custom PCB design.
  • PLC programming experience (Ladder, Function Block, Structured Text programming, etc.) on any industry standard PLCs (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, ABB, etc.) is an asset.

What Does Success Look Like:

  • You design, test, and launch amazing sensor-based technology that solves problems for customers.
  • Your code functions well at a high level in new products in real time.
  • You work well in a team. You are respectful, courteous, and kind. Always.
  • You do what you say you will do. Accountability matters. Results also matter.
  • You enjoy your job. We want this for you. You want this for you. Let’s make it happen.
  • After 12 months pass you can confidently say that you are a better engineer than when you started.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with, learn from, and support a diverse and cross-functional team, including mechanical, electrical, and robotics engineers, AI/ML researchers, and business development;
  • Work independently within a cross-functional team to develop hardware, software, and system requirements for custom sensing solutions for mining applications;
  • Design and develop hardware for sensing, filtering, and data acquisition;
  • Design and develop post-processing software for prototyping and production systems;
  • Maintain quality, performance, and robustness of applications;
  • Desire to work in a small collaborative team, with a high degree of autonomy; Be self-directed and motivated to work on challenging real-world engineering problems without prior solutions.
