COME WORK AS A MEDICAL DIRECTOR, POST GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION WITH VANCOUVER COASTAL HEALTH (VCH)!

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to join our team as the Medical Director for Medical Education (MDME). An integral member of the medical leadership team at Vancouver Acute and VP Medicine and Academic Affairs team, this individual will provide oversight of the clinical training environment for Resident Doctors, and fellows within our hospitals and care delivery sites. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with clinical programs and faculty to foster excellence in clinical training, research, innovation, and professional development. As well, they will support the quality of training experience within a welcoming and supportive environment where trainees can develop their practical skills and advance their medical careers and ideally choose to join the VCH Medical Staff where we strive to be the best place to work.
Reporting directly to the Senior Medical Directors at Vancouver Acute with ultimate reporting to the Vice President, Medicine and Academic Affairs, the Medical Director for Medical Education will oversee the processes and issues related to Resident Doctors, and fellows primarily within Vancouver Acute while also working to ensure support throughout all Vancouver Coastal Communities of Care (COCs).
In addition to supporting trainees in alignment with VCH’s strategic goals, the MDME will serve as the employment manager for Resident Doctors and ensures that VCH’s obligations to employee Resident Doctors are met including matters relating to health authority policies and regulated employer responsibilities (i.e., health and safety, and other obligations under related employment agreements).
As a Medical Director, Post Graduate Medical Education at Vancouver Coastal Health, your key accountabilities are:

Leadership and Oversight:

  • Provide visionary leadership and supportive oversight for all postgraduate medical education (PGME) programs, ensuring strict adherence to PGME accreditation standards.
  • Collaborate with Health Authority leadership to develop a regional postgraduate medical education plan in partnership with the Ministry of Health and provincial medical schools.
  • Represent the Health Authority in provincial PGME planning and allocation processes, including the Resident Allocation Subcommittee.
  • Chair a VCH learning committee as a regular forum to discuss issues and implement initiatives.

Strategic Collaboration:

  • With the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine PGME Associate Dean’s Office, Training Program Directors, Site Directors, and Coordinators to support optimal training opportunities and work environments for all trainees and acting as a liaison in areas of joint concern.
  • With VCH Medical and Operations leadership to align the trainee workforce with the delivery of exceptional patient care.
  • With the Program Coordinator, Medical Academic Affairs to administer the program efficiently and deliver on strategic projects.
  • With VCH Medical and Academic Affairs to integrate trainees into the VCH community, providing them with appropriate supports during their training and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the organization’s mission.

Lead Strategic Projects Including:

  • Collaborate with University of British Columbia Post Graduate Medical Education to conduct a comprehensive environmental scan of existing programs, resources, and opportunities to support equity and academic integrity, impacting recruitment and retention positively.
  • Act on data collected on resident performance, program outcomes, and feedback from recent graduates to improve the learning environment.
  • Benchmarking the program against peer institutions and PGME standards to identify gaps and opportunities.
  • Sponsoring an initiative to implement a management information system for clinical rotation scheduling and management.
  • Supporting competency-based training, distributed teaching, and improved trainee allocations.
  • Planning and enhancing the simulation program.
  • Involving trainees in health authority and site committees, continuous quality improvement activities, research, and other strategic endeavors.
  • Serving as a liaison between the Indigenous Family Medicine Program (UBC) and VCH.
  • Leading any other projects as required by the Senior Medical Director Vancouver Acute and VP Medicine and Academic Affairs.

Oversee Resident Doctors during their rotations at VCH, ensuring:

  • Development and implementation of standard work for general onboarding and service/unit-specific orientation at the start of each rotation.
  • Ensure appropriate access to Occupational Health and Safety for all Residents and medical Students at VCH. Ensure alignment with Medical Practitioner Occupational Safety and Health.
  • Development and enforcement of health authority policies affecting Resident Doctors.
  • Compliance with all applicable policies and follow-up on breaches.
  • Conducting investigations into culpable conduct and implementing the Resident Doctors Collective Agreement’s progressive discipline.
  • Provision of necessary information to ensure Resident Doctors’ health in the workplace.
  • Informing Resident Doctors of foreseeable occupational health and safety risks and providing instructions, training, and supervision to address these risks.
  • Liaise with local residency programs and PGME to ensure alignment with UBC and health authority policies.
  • Ensure timely investigations and reports for incidents as required by the Workers Compensation Act and OHS Regulations.
  • Manage trainee administrative and professional issues through UBC or other avenues (e.g., Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee) in a coordinated manner.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements, maintaining accreditation status, and leading efforts for accreditation site visits and reviews.

Ensure a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all trainees and preceptors.

  • Foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement in medical education, integrating the latest medical practices and technologies into clinical training.
  • Address the academic, professional, and personal needs of Resident Doctors and fellows, leveraging available resources through PGME, UBC and VCH.
  • Support trainee well-being and resilience, promoting equity, diversity and inclusion.

Other Duties

  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the quality of training experience within a welcome and supportive environment.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A Doctor of Medicine (MD) with board certification in a relevant specialty.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in medical education leadership roles, preferably in an academic medical center.
  • Advanced degree in medical education, healthcare administration or a related field is favoured.
  • A track record of innovation and/or scholarly activity in medical education is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting the creation of an organizational vision and leading programs and teams both operationally and strategically.
  • Demonstrated expertise in curriculum development, program evaluation, and accreditation processes especially with respect to PGME.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with a track record of fostering collaboration and teamwork.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire faculty, staff, and trainees.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in medical education.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Continuously seeks to develop and improve service delivery standards and practices.
