Description:

The Cellular Pathology laboratory at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton is looking for a enthusiastic and self motivated laboratory and molecular assistant to join our busy Histopathology team.
The post holder will work as a member of the Cellular Pathology laboratory and will be responsible for co-coordinating the molecular aspect of the service between the department and the Southeast Genomics Laboratory hub and for co-coordinating cases that require send away to other sites.
In addition the successful candidate will be expected to support the functions in the Immunocytochemistry department, including machine maintenance, reagent exchange and data input. They may also be required to support the main laboratory during periods of high workload.
The successful applicant must be conscientious and enthusiastic and able to work well as part of a team and under pressure. Good hand eye coordination, good keyboard skills and attention to detail are essential requirements.
The successful applicant must also have good communication and IT skills and will be expected to participate fully in the accreditation activities of the department.
Candidates looking for a Trainee Biomedical Scientist position or a progressional career post need not apply.
This is a full time position Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm ( 9am to 5pm would be considered).
The post will involve supporting the department in the accurate recording and sending away of patient molecular tests and other tests being sent away for external reporting or second opinions.
This will involve accurately recording on the appropriate request forms and databases when and where cases are sent and their subsequent return date.
The post holder will also be expected to support the functions in the immunocytochemistry laboratory, including machine maintenance and case input.
Cellular Pathology services and includes specimen data entry, specimen preparation, assisting the medical and scientific team during specimen dissection, matching completed cases for final quality control check, machine operation and maintenance, dealing with telephone enquiries; stock control; and laboratory waste disposal.
This position will be based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, working and the post-holder will be held accountable to the HR policies and procedures of UHSx.

  • Follows Standard Operating Procedures at all times
  • Receive and action requests from internal and external establishments requesting material.
  • Lead co-ordinator between the department and the South East Genomics hub
  • Locates and retrieves or requests material from the archives.
  • Distributes and archives clinical material within the department
  • Accurately records data on request forms and allocates requests to appropriate work stream
  • Records details of material received and sent by appropriate means.
  • Receives material sent from other locations and records on the laboratory computer system.
  • Data entry of specimens into the Laboratory information system
  • Create and use excel spreadsheets to record information
  • Retrieve and tabulate data from the laboratory information management system or dedicated spreadsheets.
  • Uses the laboratory information management system according to authorised protocols.
  • Complies with local and national policies for the safe, secure and confidential processing and storage of patient and other laboratory information.
  • Use Microsoft teams to communicate with colleagues when required.

  • Efficient record keeping
  • To ensure that diagnosed material is filed accurately to enable retrieval and reliable audit trail of samples.
  • Participation in data retrieval and turnaround time audits
  • Supports the functions in the Immunocytochemistry room including data input, machine maintenance and reagent exchange and removal.
  • Supports the main laboratory during periods of high workload or high staff absence.
