Responsibilities:
An opportunity has arisen for a Part Time, Medical Laboratory Assistant in our Infection Sciences department at 1 Mabledon Place.
Main duties will be assisting in the daily running of the laboratory section to which you have been assigned within the Department of Microbiology, assisting in the performance of the routine diagnostic analytical work of the department as directed and to provide general support in other areas of the Laboratory.
Other responsibilities will include booking and receiving specimens for microbiological investigations, preparing specimens for laboratory testing according to defined protocols, maintenance of laboratory equipment and ensuring reagent, stocks and other laboratory-based requirements are kept up to date.
Medical Laboratory Assistants are also required to discuss ambiguous test requests with senior scientists or clinicians and to answer enquiries from clinicians and other health care professionals based at hospitals and in the community.
Part time positions within infection sciences offer excellent opportunities for those hoping to pursue a future career in Biomedical Science or for anyone wishing to experience working in a busy diagnostic laboratory. We encourage staff to come forth with requests for training and career progression and offer internal seminars from both lab and clinical staff. The department also has a growing online repertoire of media and educational material available to staff.
The successful applicant will be expected to cover the hours from 5pm to 9pm Monday to Friday, working a 4 hours shift 1:4 Saturdays. The 4 hours on Saturday will be returned as time in lieu, which can be taken off one evening in the following week.
