The Role:
Medcan’s Laboratory and Clinic Testing team is looking for a Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician for a 9 month fixed term full-time contract position. This role will involve performing duties and analysis in the on-site lab as well as phlebotomy. The ideal candidate with 2-3 years experience in the Laboratory with knowledge of medical lab terminology and prior experience performing phlebotomy. Excellent communication and client service is a must to be successful in this role.

The Accountabilities:

  • Perform Daily maintenance on our Laboratory Analyzers
  • Run samples on our analyzers
  • Troubleshoot Instruments as may be required.
  • Performing phlebotomy.
  • Ensures that all samples are properly labeled and identified before testing.
  • Identifying incidents and non-conformities, participating in the development of effective corrective action plans, escalating as appropriate and driving continuous improvement.
  • Greet and request required information from patients, explain the specimen collection process, and ensure patients have followed necessary test protocol prior to specimen collection.
  • Sample packaging for transport;
  • Sample preparation for analysis (e.g., separation numbering – including referral specimens);
  • Reagent labeling, preparation and storage;
  • Performing and recording quality control results for interpretation and approval by the MLT.
  • Operation of automated instruments after proper functioning has been established by the MLT;
  • Temperature monitoring of thermally controlled equipment;
  • Temperature and humidity monitoring of environmental conditions;
  • Filing of records and retrieval of files;
  • Preparation and use of disinfectant solutions
  • Participation in continuous improvement activities

The Requirements:

  • Knowledge of medical lab terminology/lab technical testing
  • Prior experience as a Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant
  • Graduate of Medical Lab Assistant/Technician program preferred
  • MLPAO or equivalent certification
  • Prior experience in a medical environment, preferably in a Clinic setting
  • Superior organization and time management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Intermediate level in MS Office and Outlook
  • CPR certification

This is a temporary full-time position with scheduled between Monday and Sunday on a rotational basis. It reports to the Manager, Lab Services.
