About the Breast Unit
The Breast Unit of the CCC was created in 2011, under the leadership of Dr Fátima Cardoso, and is now working at full speed, managing around 900 new breast cancer patients a year (all stages). As a multidisciplinary team, we work together in the same physical space, facilitating patient care and comfort. All cases (early and advanced) are discussed weekly at an MDT. The team is currently composed of six dedicated medical oncologists, four breast surgeons and two plastic surgeons (our surgical team is considered a Level 3 Oncoplastic Unit), three radiation oncologists, two breast pathologists, four breast radiologists, six specialized breast nurses, a psycho-oncologist, a palliative care physician, as well as dedicated administrative, supportive and technical personnel. In May 2016, our Breast Unit was granted European Certification by Breast Centres Certification (Certificate No. 1025/00). It was the 1st certified Breast Unit in Portugal. The unit has a strong educational role both nationally and internationally. It collaborates globally with cooperative groups including EORTC, IBCSG, SOLTI and BIG where the breast unit plays an active role.
About the Champalimaud Foundation
The Champalimaud Foundation (CF), a private non-profit organisation, was established in 2005 as a global reference in scientific research and clinical practice, developing its activity in the areas of neuroscience and cancer. Through a translational methodology, it establishes a direct and interdependent link between basic research and clinical activities to promote significant scientific advances, aiming to achieve improvements in global health and well-being.
The Champalimaud Foundation headquarters and clinics are located in the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, a state-of-the-art facility completed in 2010 and now supporting cutting-edge basic and translational research sided with clinics. The core mission is to offer premier clinical services, including early diagnosis, treatment, counseling, and follow-up, as it strives to define new standards of patient care via specialised Disease Management Teams.
With the comfort and well-being of patients and accompanying persons in mind, spacious reception areas were created, overlooking the indoor tropical garden, and promoting a peaceful environment.
The modern diagnostic, examination and treatment rooms are created to provide an efficient service, supported by the best human and technical resources. An outdoor garden was also created, exclusive for users of the clinic, which was especially designed to convey a sense of serenity, peace and well-being to our patients.
The Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre - resulting from a partnership between the Champalimaud Foundation and the Mauricio and Charlotte Botton couple, who contributed with 50 million euros to its construction – is the first in the world simultaneously dedicated to the research and treatment of pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest types of cancer.
Combining state of the art services and equipment, aimed at guaranteeing the well-being and comfort of patients, supported by the most advanced techniques, and resulting from an exclusive aesthetic approach, this centre comprises areas of research laboratories, a day hospital, a surgical centre, as well as inpatient and intensive care facilities.
Over the past 20 years, the number of people with pancreatic cancer has increased exponentially throughout most of the world, especially in the most industrialised countries. Pancreatic cancer is already the fourth leading cause of cancer death in Europe and in the next 10-20 years it is estimated that the number of new cases could increase by over 70%, becoming the second leading cause of cancer death in Europe and the USA.
The new Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre is a clear response to the need for targeted action towards better knowledge and control of a disease that, in 80% of cases, is diagnosed at an advanced stage and, therefore, is one of the most lethal.
This Centre continues the innovative and distinguishing model initiated at the Champalimaud Foundation in 2010 - bringing science, clinic and patients closer together - adopting a translational methodology, which establishes a direct and interdependent relationship between research and clinical activity.
The Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre intends not only to deepen knowledge of the biology and evolution of pancreatic cancer, but above all to develop more innovative forms of treatment and clinical trials, capable of offering patients a better response in controlling the disease.
