JOB SUMMARY:

The Rotman Research Institute (RRI) is a premier international centre for the study of human brain function. The RRI advances the understanding of human brain structure and function in critical areas of cognitive neuroscience, including perception, memory, language, attention, and decision making. With a primary focus on aging and brain health, RRI scientists and trainees, and other clinician researchers across Baycrest, promote and impact effective care and improved quality of life for older adults through research into age- and disease-related behavioural and neural changes.
Reporting to the MEG Scientist the MEG System Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the MEG Lab; maintains the function of the MEG equipment; and, assists MEG users in setting up experiments on the system, and managing and analyzing research data. The MEG System Manager will aid in minimizing the downtime of the MEG in order to maximize the facility’s capacity.

QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • B.Sc. (M.Sc. preferred) in biomedical engineering or mechanical, electrical or physical engineering, or related disciplines
  • Two to three years relevant professional experience in engineering technology, research laboratory or equivalent
  • Previous (preferred) in human physiology research (e.g. MEG, EEG, EMG).
  • Experience operating and troubleshooting electronic laboratory equipment.
  • Proficiency in understanding IT management, operating systems and network administration
  • Programming experience, preferably Matlab and Python
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal.
  • Detail-oriented
  • Ability to influence others and to work with people of diverse background
  • Mentoring and coaching skills with the ability to support team members
  • Strong communication skills – written and oral
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Comprehensive understanding of technical and research information procedures for analysis and interpretation in a healthcare environment.
  • Well-developed leadership, client relations, and problem-solving abilities
  • Comfortable working in a team

Responsibilities:

  • Performing daily maintenance of the MEG equipment.
  • Securing permanent cooling of the MEG system, including daily recording of helium boiloff and level, planning refill cycles, and performing helium transfer from storage tanks.
  • Performing daily system performance tests to guarantee the operation of the MEG within its specifications.
  • Training MEG users in operating the MEG and the related laboratory equipment.
  • Assisting MEG users in operating the MEG equipment.
  • Assisting MEG users in planning experimental setup and configuration of MEG recording.
  • Assisting MEG users in managing acquired data, such as data transfer, storage, and backup.
  • Participating in in MEG data analysis
  • Managing lab inventory and supplies for standard experimental procedures.
  • Managing a web-based system for lab scheduling and billing.
  • Managing the lab’s hardware and modifying it as necessary to accommodate experiments.
  • Assisting in planning and implementing a new helium recycling system when and if this becomes available.
  • Maintaining the cryogenic apparatus for helium recycling.
