JOB SUMMARY: Catholic Charities is seeking a trauma-informed dynamic individual for its mental health practitioner role. The ideal person for this role will be kind, engaged, attuned, patient (but persistent), and fun!
The Mental Health Practitioner’s primary responsibility is to maintain a safe, healthy, respectful, and therapeutic milieu in which student clients can grow and through which individual treatment plans can be implemented.
The Mental Health Practitioner is specifically responsible for planning, participating, and executing scheduled services and activities. The Mental Health Practitioner is directly responsible to the Unit Manager, receives supervision and direction from the Mental Health Services Supervisor and is a part of the program’s treatment team overseen by the Senior Program Manager.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A mental health practitioner for a child member must have training working with children.
- Ability to pass a Minnesota DHS Background Check
- MHPs must be under clinical supervision of a mental health professional and qualified in at least one of the following ways:
- Has completed at least 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in behavioral sciences or related fields and has at least 2,000 hours of supervised experience in the delivery of services to adults or children with:
- Mental illness, substance use disorder, or emotional disturbance or
- Traumatic brain injury or developmental disabilities and completes training on mental illness, recovery from mental illness, mental health de-escalation techniques, co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse, and psychotropic medications and side effects.
OR
- Is working in a day treatment program; or has completed a practicum or internship that requires direct interaction with adults or children served and is focused on behavioral sciences or related fields.
OR
- Has at least 4,000 hours of supervised work experience in the delivery of services to adults or children with any of the following:
- Mental illness, substance use disorder, or emotional disturbance, or
- Traumatic brain injury or developmental disabilities and completes training on mental illness, recovery from mental illness, mental health de-escalation techniques, co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse, and psychotropic medications and side effects.
OR
- Has at least 2,000 hours of supervised experience in the delivery of services to adults or children with any of the following:
- Mental illness, emotional disturbance, or substance use disorder, and receives clinical supervision as required by applicable statutes and rules from a mental health professional at least once a week until the requirement of 4,000 hours of supervised experience is met, or
- Traumatic brain injury or developmental disabilities; completes training on mental illness, recovery from mental illness, mental health de-escalation techniques, co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse, and psychotropic medications and side effects; and receives clinical supervision as required by applicable statutes and rules at least once a week from a mental health professional until the requirement of 4,000 hours of supervised experience is met.
- Has a graduate student internship or a bachelor’s or master’s degree and is a graduate student in behavioral sciences or related fields and is formally assigned by an accredited college or university to an agency or facility for clinical training.
OR
- Holds a master’s or other graduate degree in behavioral sciences or related fields with any of the following:
- Holds a master’s or other graduate degree in behavioral sciences or related fields.
- Holds a bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences or related fields and completes a practicum or internship that:
- requires direct interaction with adults or children served, and
- is focused on behavioral sciences or related fields.
REPORTING AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: The MHP reports directly to the Unit Manager and has no supervisory responsibilities.

Responsibilities:
- Mental Health Practitioner I
- Actively supervise all student clients. Anticipate and plan for challenges and concerns.
- Provide structure, routine, limits, and expectations consistently and predictability in conjunction with peers to facilitate a sense of security and safety to clients and staff in environment.
- Adhere to agency-approved training for de-escalation and physical intervention.
- Demonstrate the skills of professional youth care work including engagement, understanding, sensitivity, rapport building, creative problem solving, and attunement to needs.
- Plan, participate in, and execute individual and group skills training that meets the clients’ social, emotional, and developmental needs as well as meets expectations of Skills Training set by supervisory team.
- Actively assist and encourage clients to engage, regulate and apply newly learned skills. Praise clients for positive efforts.
- Incorporate philosophies, language, concepts, and interventions associated with Models of Care.
- Participate in the assessment and documentation of progress towards client’s treatment goals; make recommendations to existing and future goals based on client’s needs.
- Responsible for promptly and accurately collecting, entering, managing, and reporting of client data into systems of record.
- Communicate and collaborate via direct communication and email.
- Participate in clinical supervision, consultations, and team meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Mental Health Practitioner II (in addition to the above):
- Consistently demonstrates skill and proficiency in all “Essential Functions” areas.
- Initiates and participates in the planning and problem solving around specific client/group therapeutic needs.
- Mental Health Practitioner III (in addition to the above):
- Assume additional area of responsibility that meets a need and enhances the program (e.g., developing activities and written lesson plans to enhance skills training curriculum, participation on a committee, etc.).
- Consistently show initiative, responsibility, and leadership of the treatment environment; proactively and effectively addressing concerns, problem solving, planning, and teaming with others to sustain a therapeutic environment.
- Complete training related to all Models of Care.
- Mental Health Practitioner IV (in addition to the above):
- Consistently model behavior that aligns with program philosophy, Models of Care, job expectations, professionalism, and integrity.
- Demonstrate ownership, leadership, and an optimistic attitude with respect to program, clients, mission, and work; identify needs, share ideas for growth and improvement, adapt to changes, etc.
- Actively participate in the orientation and training of new Mental Health Practitioners.
