QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalency required
  • One (1) year of Nurse Aide/Assistant/CHHA/Emergency Medical Technician, or satisfactory completion of an Aide training program
  • 3-5 years of related experience in a psychiatric or geriatric-psychiatric service setting required
  • Preferably at least one (1) year experience as a phlebotomist and/or EKG technician with health care background
  • Must successfully complete MMC clinical training orientation
  • Annual BEST certification

SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Day Shift
  • Part-Time
  • 20 hours per week

Responsibilities:

  • The Mental Health Technician works under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse to provide care to patients with diverse psychiatric illnesses
  • The Mental Health Technician is expected to remain alert and observant to prevent injury or escape, and engage in therapeutic communication and activities to distract, occupy, and develop therapeutic rapport
  • Mental Health Technicians are expected to comply with hospital policies on confidentiality, infection control, and compassionate care
  • Adherence to patient restrictions and ability to appropriately manage aggressive, violent, and confused behavior required
  • All methods of practice and,or work performance shall conform to written established hospital policies and procedures and be carried to the highest achievable level of competence in a manner demonstrating concern and consideration
  • Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments. i,e, damaged floors,walls,ceiling tiles,unsecured areas, and medical errors, etc
  • Accompanies patients when transported to a dept for testing or procedures
  • Remains with patient at all times unless relieved or directed by a caregiver
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment
  • Serves prepared meals
  • May provide for safe ambulation
  • Provides companionship and conversation with patients
  • Provides stimulating activities for patients to participate in, i,e,board games, repetitious simple tasks, videos, etc
  • Monitors patient activity at all times
  • Receives report before starting assignment
  • Understands information pertinent to assigned patients
  • Follows directions for specific patients. For example: related to dietary requirements, needs, and completes assignments
  • Reports vital signs out of normal range to RN
  • Checks patient’s name band for correct identification
  • Assures proper name and that band is secure on the patient’s wrist
  • Performs laboratory procedures as noted: EKG, venipuncture, capillary sampling, glucose monitoring and other laboratory procedures as directed by the RN
  • Assists patient with patient hygiene performs perinea! care, and AOL activities
  • Positions patients to relieve pressure and preserve skin integrity
  • Observes and reports changes in the physical, mental, emotional, behavioral and social status to the Registered Nurse
  • Recognizes emergent or potential emergent situations and responds appropriately
  • Remains alert, observant, and attentive to patient at all times
  • Reviews and follows patient’s care plan to ascertain patient goals
  • Documents in Safety and Attendance patient’s location, activity, behavior, thought content, and level of observation in the electronic record every 15 minutes
  • Reports off-duty to the nurse before leaving the unit, and make sure that relief by BHT for the next shift is present with patient before leaving the patient alone
  • Correctly complies with all national patient safety goals and risk reduction procedures and associated policies as applicable to the scope of practice
