REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE
- Educated to Degree level (or equivalent qualifications) plus relevant practical experience - where no equivalent qualification is held significant practical relevant experience and expertise in a series of progressively more demanding roles will be required.
- Evidence of literacy and numeracy, with the ability to write clearly, and to produce and analyse information and data.
- Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
- A good understanding of Higher Education and the issues impacting on student employability
- Excellent relationship building and stakeholder management skills and the ability to adapt to a diverse range of stakeholder groups
- Excellent presentation skills
- High level of attention to detail
- Previous line management experience
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and use initiative to resolve problems
- Adaptable and flexible when faced with change demonstrating drive and resilience to ensure programmes are developed to their fullest

Responsibilities:
ROLE SUMMARY
External Engagement is a key service provision within Careers Network and plays an important part in the University achieving its Employability Strategy. Opportunities for students to engage externally both outside and within their discipline impacts across many strategic areas including graduate employability, student experience, and alumni and external engagement.
Mentoring is key to delivering external engagement for all our students and impacts across many strategic areas including graduate employability, student experience and recruitment, and alumni and employer engagement. Students benefit from an increase in sector knowledge, confidence to explore opportunities and clarity on what is next for their future career development. Mentors benefit from a new perspective, an opportunity to reflect on why they do what they do and to continue their relationship with the University.
The purpose of this role is to strategically and operationally lead on all stages of our Mentoring Programmes and to continue to effectively grow the number of high-quality mentoring relationships to reach students who need insight and support from an industry professional mentor. A key element to the role will be to support the project management of the next phase in mentoring processes working both internally and externally, to increase student and graduate engagement.
MAIN DUTIES
Reporting to the Head of Programmes in CN, the Mentoring Programme Lead will deliver the following objectives:
- To provide a high quality, efficient and effective mentoring service to students and recent graduates that adheres to all aspects of recruitment, matching, monitoring, evaluating and impact measurement, utilising both existing processes and new online processes.
- To increase the number of mentoring relationships working closely with colleagues internally e.g. the Development & Alumni Relations Office (DARO) and externally e.g. external alumni and employers.
- To enable students and graduates to network and develop long-term mentoring relationships based on criteria such as career area and work location. This will include students and graduates from all backgrounds and nationalities.
- To utilise resources to support the facilitation of mentoring relationships that meet both mentor and mentee career interests and aspirations. This includes online (e.g. Canvas), website and workshop resources.
- To formulate innovative approaches to mentoring designed to support the next generation of industry professionals and build on their relationship with the University of Birmingham.
- Lead from CN’s perspective on mentoring on an international level, e.g. working closely with colleagues at the University’s Dubai campus.
- Promotes equality and values diversity, acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
- Supports the University’s sustainability agenda through resource efficient working.
