Description:

NIWA is a dynamic research organisation, with expertise central to New Zealand’s future economic and environmental prosperity. We are New Zealand’s leading natural resources and environmental science services provider to public and private sector customers.
We are looking for a meteorologist to join our busy team and strengthen our capability to meet the increase in demand from the public and industry for our short, medium and long-term weather, climate and environmental forecasting services.
The key purpose of this position is to contribute to the delivery of our meteorological and environmental forecasting services by preparing regular forecasts and communicating these through a range of media, including print, digital, radio and television. A major emphasis will be on contributing to the development, communication, marketing and deployment of environmental forecasting services and products for weather-sensitive clients, particularly in government, primary industry and other commercial sectors. Due to the variety of the services we provide, the position is likely to involve rostered duties to cover our weekday, weekend and early morning/late evening delivery requirements.

To be successful in this position you will have exceptional communication skills, advanced knowledge of the latest meteorology, climate and environmental science forecasting techniques, extensive multi-channel media delivery experience, along with the ability to accurately analyse data and models to create both weather forecasts and climate outlooks. As an experienced professional in this field, you will have a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, physics or atmospheric science, and/or equivalent experience in a relevant aspect of engineering or environmental science, along with a qualification and/or training in weather forecasting and media presenting. In addition, candidates with any of the following skills and experience will have an advantage:

  • a comprehensive knowledge of New Zealand meteorology and climate (including atmosphere, hydrosphere and marine environments) and climate outlook science;
  • experience in computer programming languages such as Python or R, particularly in relation to the parsing and analysis of meteorological or climatological datasets; and
  • a strong background in sub-seasonal and seasonal forecasting.

The preferred location for this position is NIWA’s head office in Auckland. This is an exciting opportunity to join an internationally renowned environmental research and forecasting organisation and deliver impact for New Zealand. We are offering a competitive remuneration package, a vibrant central city location, free car parking and the opportunity to work as part of a progressive and highly innovative team.
