About the business
At Longtrail Farms we’re committed to best practice farming and supporting our team. Located in Parilla, we are a well-established 10,000 ha enterprise of wheat, canola and barley cropping, potatoes under centre pivot irrigation and an intensive sheep operation.
We’re looking for a full time, dedicated and passionate farmer with experience in machinery operation and maintenance.
About the role
- Experience in planning and coordinating farm operation including the production and marketing of crops.
- Experience in accurately and safely applying chemicals, ensuring accurate rates and spraying conditions are adhered to for different crop varieties.
- Operating and maintaining equipment used in oilseed, pulse, and wheat production such as tractors, harvesting combines and spraying equipment.
- Maintain knowledge of soils and composition, as well as seasonal weather patterns and best practice rotational cropping methods.
- Liaise with Agronomist on seeding, fertilising, harvesting and other matters to ensure maximum yields are achieved from crops.
- Make paddock observations regarding nutrition, disease, weed and insects that may impact growth and production.
- Organise and record chemical inventory, ensuring that all chemicals are properly stored and handled.
- Understanding of GPS systems in cropping machinery.
- Extensive knowledge of fertilizer and pesticides and upkeep of relevant safe handling accreditation.
- Coordinating shift roster for busy harvest and seeding periods.
- Undertake additional tasks in quiet cropping periods such as machinery maintenance, fencing, and other ad hoc tasks.
- Irrigate fields and maintain sources of water and equipment, such as pumps and pipes
Key Selection Criteria
- 3+ years’ work experience and a tertiary qualification OR 5+ years of experience if no relevant tertiary education exists.
- Exceptional organisation, communication and time management skills
- Fit and able to perform physical and repetitive tasks
- Ability to work as part of a team, and unsupervised.
- HC/MC Licence, forklift licence, telehandler licence preferred
- First aid certificate preferred
