The Ministry of Municipal Affairs assists municipalities in providing well-managed, collaborative, and accountable local government to Albertans. Our main responsibilities are:

  • Funding supports for municipalities
  • A system that strives to ensure appropriate safety standards for the construction and maintenance of buildings and equipment
  • Protections for new home buyers and required licensing for home builders
  • Province-wide support for access to public library services for Albertans
  • Management of about 2.6 million acres of public land in the province’s three Special Areas
  • Independent review and decisions on local matters by the Land and Property Rights Tribunal

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification.

Refer to

  • Post-secondary education, such as a bachelor’s or master’s degree in political science, Economics, Business or Public Administration, or a related field; and 4 years of progressively responsible related experience is required or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency:

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Responsibilities:

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure that Alberta’s improvement districts are managed and administered in compliance with all applicable federal and provincial legislation and specifically in compliance with the Municipal Government Act, and ensure that high standards of accountability, effectiveness and efficiency are maintained. Improvement districts require varying levels of oversight.
  • Strengthen the capacity and sustainability of municipalities by enhancing local governance and administration knowledge, and elector understanding of local governance through providing advice and information to elected and appointed municipal officials and to the public and providing training to municipal officials.
  • Be responsive to the ministry, elected officials and public by providing accurate and timely responses to ministerial assignments, including correspondence, briefing notes, and action requests, are prepared for the signature of the Minister, Deputy Minister, and Assistant Deputy Minister, ensuring consistent communication of key messages; appropriateness of contents for identified audiences; and compliance with relevant government and ministry legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Support ministry initiatives, programs and services by actively participating in departmental activities related to enhancing service provision to ensure alignment of the department’s strategic vision.
