JOB SUMMARY

The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

DPSS Museum Security is a full-service public safety department that works to meet the needs of the University of Michigan community. Our officers are highly trained security professionals equipped to serve all members of our community. We manage all security operations for the Museum of Art, Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, the Museum of Natural History and may also provide security services for other university buildings and events. We offer an integrated customer service approach to safety and security, while protecting the assets of the museums. We provide a safe community while improving the quality of life for all those living, learning, working, and visiting our community. As a Museum Security Officer, you will report to the Director of Museum Security.
We are a seven (7) day per week operation with 24/7 responsibilities. Work schedules may include weekends, afternoons, holidays and unanticipated overtime. This is a uniformed position following the DPSS uniformed dress code. There will be both stationary and foot patrol assignments, and building specific responsibilities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • High School or GED equivalent and one (1) ear of experience in a security, fire, military, customer service, or emergency management field
  • Experience with the enforcement of fire, safety, and security practices
  • Can assist emergency response personnel with maneuvering persons who may be combative, intoxicated, or unconscious, and can restrain someone.
  • Skillset in handling emergency situations and using associated equipment
  • You can perform life saving techniques such as CPR and First Aid.
  • A valid driver’s license and a driving record with less than 6 points.
  • You must pass a background investigation, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination.

Responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES*

  • You will ensure public safety, protect our assets and act as the primary liaison with state and local police, fire and security agencies;
  • Act calmly in emergency situations and use emergency equipment.
  • Detect safety hazards and criminal activity.
  • Patrol museums and grounds to identify safety hazards and criminal activity
  • Conduct investigations and prepare reports.
  • Provide security and customer service for Museum events and traffic and crowd control for special events.
  • Respectfully communicate and work with all staff and community members.
  • Enforce University regulations and security procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters.
