Reporting to the Natural Areas Ecologist, the Natural Areas Field Technician will play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological health of our natural spaces and ensuring compliance with the City of Edmonton’s environmental standards. This role requires effective management of tasks and time, along with strong communication skills to collaborate with various stakeholders.

In this role, you can expect to:

  • Conduct tree and wildfire risk assessments along trails, property lines, and other target areas
  • Collect data in the field with GIS Software, including tree measurements, assessments and other ecological attributes
  • Assist with various projects which may include recommendations and tree evaluations for monetary value
  • Conduct ecological monitoring and share recommendations should restoration be required
  • Review landscape drawings and maps to determine tree ownership or utility conflicts
  • Coordinate contractor work to ensure compliance with City standards and agreements, while advising and/or resolving any discrepancies on the work
  • Conduct field inspections and assess the progress and completion of contracted tree work
  • Ensure compliance with safety and ENVISO requirements
  • Assist with the administration of the Corporate Tree Management Policy (C456C) as outlined in its procedures, and track and report any damages to tree assets
  • Review tree protection plans as they relate to the Public Tree Permit
  • Respond to public complaints or inquiries, orally or in writing
  • Assist with creating educational and engaging content for social media posts
  • Perform related work, as required

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a 2 year diploma with an ecology, forestry, landscape or a related field
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in forestry, landscaping or related experience
  • Proficiency in Google applications, including but not limited to Google Doc, Google Sheets, and Google Meets
  • Ability to use ArcGIS software and applications

SKILLS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS:

  • Knowledge of arboricultural techniques and practices
  • Knowledge of best practices in forest ecology, naturalization and/or restoration
  • Ability to identify bird/wildlife species and native plant species, especially trees and shrubs
  • Ability to identify legislated weeds
  • Ability to write detailed reports and maintain detailed records
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively deal with the public
  • Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish priorities and effectively multitask
  • Strong innovative and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of Municipal, Provincial and Federal environmental policies and regulations
