JOB SUMMARY

With a heritage dating back to the 1930s and based in Portsmouth Naval Base, 1710 Naval Air Squadron is a mixed Civil Service and Military team of technical specialists from multidisciplinary backgrounds, using scientific and engineering reasoning to overcome UK MOD aircraft operational issues to recover, sustain and enhance aviation and general military capability.
This role sits within the Modifications department, who deliver capability enhancements to UK Defence Aviation assets through the design, test and embodiment of modifications.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking for an individual with aviation design experience with a working knowledge of Defence Standard 00-970, Design and Airworthiness Requirements for Service Aircraft including EASA Certification Specifications, to join our modifications design team delivering a wide range of modification projects across numerous aircraft platforms. The job will require you to take a set of requirements and coordinate the conceptual and detailed design of technical solutions to the challenge. For each project, you will conduct site visits to understand the requirements and constraints and then lead a team of experienced designers, reviewing their designs and authorising technical drawings. As a Military Aviation Authority (MAA) Design Approved Organisation Scheme (DAOS) accredited unit, we deliver assured industry standard aircraft design services. Your role will be key to making sure these designs meet the various defence and civilian standards including airworthiness, structural integrity and safety. You will be instrumental in setting the appropriate requirements and generating compliance documentation, building evidence through design and Test & Evaluation activity to support claims and arguments of compliance against each standard.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Highly desirable experience includes:

  • Aircraft component design
  • Aircraft systems design
  • Aircraft maintenance (military or civilian).
  • CAD software (Autodesk Inventor preferable)
  • Working with Defence stakeholders such as Delivery Teams, DSTL, QQ and industry partners.
  • Working knowledge of Def Stan 00-970, 00-051 and 00-056.
  • Working knowledge of EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) design regulations.
  • Understanding of MAA Regulatory Publications.

Qualifications:
With strong English and Maths skills we’re seeking applicants with a minimum Level 4 Qualification OR a minimum of three years equivalent practical engineering experience
You will report directly to the Modifications Manager who will support and guide you in your structured training and development within the team.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. RESPONSIBILITIES

Your output will include:

  • To review and authorise the design and associated technical drawings of the modification.
  • To review and approve the compliance arguments in the compliance documentation.
  • To supervise and mentor designers.
  • Present the technical elements of the design at Design Reviews and other key meetings.
  • Act as a design SME in Safety Review Meetings and Hazard Identification events at agreed points throughout the Modification project.
  • Lead configuration control of all design drawings to the point of delivery to the customer.

Approve and sign modification documentation including the Certificate of Design.
