ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • To be flexible with working hours to ensure resilience within the team and meet the requirements of the role. On occasions this may be to support fast time response to critical incidents, major events and serious crime or disorder.
  • The post-holder must have a high level of personal integrity and successfully attain and maintain security vetting and appropriate clearance to work in the post-holder’s intelligence environment.
  • The post holder will be prepared to attend and give evidence at Crown Court, Coroner’s Court, County Court and any other required judicial process.
  • The post holder should be aware that the role may require exposure to violent, disturbing or extreme material. The likelihood and nature of this will vary depending upon the posting but welfare and psychological support will be provided, as appropriate.

Skills & Experience

  • Candidates are required to be educated to A level, or equivalent, standard. These should be vocational or academic qualifications which include a research element. Alternatively to have proven and well evidenced experience of crime/intelligence research in a relevant field.
  • Proven experience of assimilating and making sense of relevant information. This includes being able to: identify potential risk, make links between information, identify patterns, trends, series, similarities and discrepancies with information.
  • Able to demonstrate good innovation and problem solving skills in order to develop and apply effective and appropriate research parameters for problems. To be able to apply these skills to problems which may be dynamic and/or where the requirement is vague.
  • Able to negotiate and persuade groups or individuals, including managers of police and partner agencies. Be articulate and persuasive in order to influence colleagues in their use of research and intelligence packages.
  • To be competent in the use of MS Office software, and the ability to learn and apply skills in bespoke software (including systems relevant to the production and presentation of research and other data).
  • Good time management skills, being flexible in approach to the role, working well under pressure and be able to plan and prioritise a demanding workload, producing reports within timescales set and without close supervision.
  • Confident and professional communication and presentation skills in order to obtain and present data and information to staff at all levels, both in report format and via meetings/presentations.
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and independently, as appropriate and be able to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with partners and colleagues.
  • Must be capable of, and demonstrate, absolute discretion in handling matters of a personal, sensitive, and confidential nature.
  • The ability to work calmly and effectively, especially when working under pressure.
  • A flexible approach towards achieving team objectives and be willing to undertake a wide range of duties.
  • The ability to quickly acquire and apply knowledge. To be able to learn and apply appropriate legislation and administrative policies, procedures and systems in order to ensure that intelligence and data is managed correctly

Responsibilities:

THE STARTING SALARY FOR THIS ROLE WILL USUALLY BE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SALARY RANGE AND WILL BE PRO-RATA IF THE WORKING HOURS ARE LESS THAN FULL TIME.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • You will propose, discuss and agree the parameters (i.e. scope, timescales, outcomes) for research with customers and undertake in-depth research of information to inform decision makers.
  • You will collect and collate information from a variety of internal and external sources and identify and develop potential new sources of information, evaluating the information for its reliability, validity, usefulness and any consequent impact this may have upon the research and prioritise information for action. Maintain a full audit trail for each piece of research.
  • You will obtain, update and manipulate large data sets, both numerical and text. Produce this using a variety of computer tools including (but not limited to) databases, spreadsheets, geographic information systems, social media tools and data visualisation software, highlighting patterns, anomalies and irregularities in the data.
  • You will identify trends, series, linked crimes, vulnerable victims, possible suspects/ offenders, hotspots and intelligence gaps through timely research of all necessary Force systems and external sources (e.g. internet, social media or partner agencies) to identify threat, risk and harm associated with the subject of research.
  • You will build up and maintain a broad network of internal and external contacts for the purpose of developing and sharing intelligence, research, product and best practice.
  • You will develop intelligence products, research reports, charts, maps and briefings for operational use. Summarise clearly, concisely and accurately key research findings, in an evidential format if necessary.
  • You will attend meetings and give presentations as appropriate to the purpose of the role. This may include meetings from outside the county or away from police premises, and/or with colleagues from other departments or agencies.
  • You will help improve the quality of Sussex Police held data resolving (or referring to the appropriate person to remedy) data errors identified during the course of research.
  • You will provide support to spontaneous, critical and major incidents or events as directed. This can also include providing support to other Divisions or Departments as directed by the Partnership Manager. This may include working outside your standard contracted hours and/or away from your usual base of work at short notice.
  • You will conduct all responsibilities in strict adherence with all relevant legislation, codes of practice, standards, protocols, procedures and guidelines.
