Job Summary
Based in Calgary and reporting to the Manager of ISP Network, Network Engineer will be responsible for designing, dimensioning, building, and testing the core network infrastructure used for service delivery to our residential and business customers. The incumbent in this position is expected to be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) with a thorough understanding of the latest industry trends and best practices related to the network components.
Performance Areas
Network Planning
1. Perform efficient IP and Transport network utilization monitoring for timely expansion planning.
2. Propose timely network expansion to address capacity growth.
3. Work closely with carriers and transit providers to address capacity augmentation as needed.
Technology and Network Evolution
1. Lead the design, and implementation activities for WAN (IP and Fiber) projects.
2. Perform product evaluations and proof of concept testing for new product introduction.
3. Prepare and maintain network level architecture documentation (diagrams, processes, and procedures).
4. Stay informed of current and upcoming technologies to appropriately support organizational needs.
Business Continuity Planning (BCP)
1. Work closely with the leadership for developing, maintaining, and implementing network disaster recovery strategies including risk assessment for the network infrastructure.
2. Analyze and document existing single point of failures in the network and build redundancies to overcome that limitation.
3. Work closely with the leadership and Network Analysts for implementation of business continuity and disaster recovery plans.
4. Test documented business continuity strategies and plans.
Business Development Support
1. Keep in touch with market for services offered and identify creative or otherwise business opportunities to management.
2. Help create technical solutions to business problems or challenges related to the service delivery.
3. Help reduce costs related to the service delivery in order to stay competitive.
Network Security and Configuration Management
1. Maintain and manage ISP network firewall to ensure that the network is well protected.
2. Ensure all required software upgrades are applied to the network components timely after proper testing and documentation.
3. Maintain a current knowledge of security issues in network areas and cascade this information to others.
4. Ensure network security best practices are in place for core network infrastructure.
5. Define configuration templates to ensure uniformity of device configuration.
6. Ensure appropriate version control/backups exist for the network device configurations.
Documentation and Monitoring
1. Maintain documentation that is updated regularly and stored centrally for easy access. It should include network documents (diagrams, processes, as-builts etc.) and requisite information necessary to rebuild services when needed.
2. Ensure that the network systems have automated monitoring that is capable of identifying problems as proactively as feasible.
3. Escalate all network and service issues to management and/or vendors appropriately.
Service Delivery
1. Lead the implementation for the delivery of complex network projects.
2. Work closely with vendors and use appropriate escalation to assist with timely network troubleshooting when needed.
3. Perform network audits to review and improve configuration using industry’s best practices.
Planning and Change Management
1. Identify and recommend changes to improve network performance, security, and reliability.
2. Plan and coordinate all changes to network systems and services according to established change management procedures.
3. Prepare required documentation (MOP, Test Plan, Reason for Change, Post change updates etc.) as needed.
4. Responsible for timely service delivery and availability.
5. Review and coordinate on approved change requests submitted by other departments.
6. Coordinate with internal stakeholders on changes that impact multiple departments/groups.
Customer Experience Enhancement
1. Act as internal escalation point of contact for timely resolution of complex customer issues.
2. Maintain an ethical, positive, and professional image in all dealings with external clients and internal partners.
3. Respond to client inquiries in a timely manner.
4. Conduct technical presentations to existing and prospective customers as required.
5. Provide Tier 2/3 support for internal and external customers when needed.
6. Consult with users and evaluate requirements, recommend designs, provide cost analyses, plan projects, and coordinate tasks for installation of data networks.
7. Analyze and resolve technical problems for established systems and services.
8. Ensure all trouble tickets/calls are tracked via ticketing system.
Reporting
1. Report on weekly activity showing progress on tasks, and major projects.
2. Attend and contribute to weekly team meeting.
3. Track all network issues in the trouble ticketing system.
4. Maintain status for all active projects and activities in a project management system.
Training
1. Provide training as required to internal staff, and external customers.
2. Achieve and maintain professional certifications and training as required.
3. Provide training to fellow team members covering a high-level overview of the operations of network systems as well as day-to-day operational matters such that they can provide basic network support when needed.
Other
1. Vehicles
1.1. Maintain a clean and orderly vehicle with associated equipment and stock inventory.
1.2. Ensure security of the group vehicle provided.
2. Maintain the departmental inventory of tools supplied by CFOC and use these tools in the appropriate manner to achieve the tasks required.
3. Cooperate with management and staff in furthering the objectives of the organization.
4. Always maintain a positive corporate image. Internally, maintain constructive working relationships within the organization.
5. React to change productively and handle other duties as assigned.
6. Work cooperatively with other departments to coordinate support and escalation.
Job Specifications

  1. Experience
  • 5-years’ experience in an ISP or MSO environment with excellent knowledge and experience in IP networking, IP routing and switching and OTN.
  1. Education and Trainings/Certifications
  • Equivalent to completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in computer science, information systems or a closely related field.
  • Possession of one or more approved information technology certificates and/or completion of other approved technology-related training may substitute for some or all the required education.
  1. Certifications:

Industry standard Cisco/Juniper certifications (preferably on the service provider side)

  • JNCIA-Junos, JNCIS-SP, JNCIP-SP
