Description:

This role is an exciting opportunity to serve as a leader within a diverse and dynamic team committed to transforming public education in the Providence Public School District (PPSD). We serve approximately 20,000 students across 37 schools. Over 8000 students (40%) are Multilingual Learners. 2000 students (10%) are new to the U.S school system, starting school in the U.S within the past two years. And over 500 students identified as Students with Interrupted/Inconsistent Formal Education (SIFE).
This is an outstanding opportunity for an individual with experience working with Newcomers in an urban setting. The NEWCOMER COORDINATOR will work closely with District Administrative teams to support Newcomer programs and services that will result in positive academic outcomes for Newcomer students, specifically our growing SIFE and Afghan refugee population.
Successful candidates must demonstrate a deep belief in the capacity of ALL students to achieve at high levels and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse set of partners and stakeholders to drive transformative change within and outside of an organization. To succeed in this role, you must have experience working with Multilingual Learner students, specifically SIFE and refugees. You must have experience creating and leading professional development. You must exhibit strong leadership, be a master communicator, and have a track record of successfully collaborating with a large number of adults.
Successful candidates must also possess a high level of comfort with ambiguity and the willingness to seek innovative solutions.

RIDE REQUIREMENTS:

  • ESL K-12 Certification Required
  • Building Admin K-12 preferred

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS:

  • Multilingual candidate (Dari and/or Pashto preferred)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Successful experience collaborating with diverse populations
  • Ability to design, deliver, and coordinate high quality professional development in a variety of venues
  • Demonstrated proficiency with PC-based computer applications, Microsoft Office applications, e-mail, google applications, web applications, and industry-specific technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the district’s initiatives to expand and improve implementation of effective, efficient, and high quality Newcomer supports and services
  • Coordinate new initiatives and professional development to ensure PPSD provides all Newcomers with the services and supports they need to thrive
  • Ensure district newcomer goals are defined and achieved;
  • Meet regularly with district and school staff to discuss and resolve priorities
  • Compile, evaluate and analyze data regularly, in order to drive improvement;
  • Ensure the MLL office activities and procedures are in compliance with all laws, policies, regulations and standards pertaining to Newcomers
  • Collaborate effectively with PPSD schools and departments, public agencies and community organizations.
  • Support district efforts to increase Newcomer family engagement, with a specific focus on our growing Afghan refugee population
  • Demonstrate positive and collaborative behavior when interacting with students, families, clients, visitors, and PPSD staff;
  • Act in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and PPSD information.
  • Attend all district and school–level meetings as required.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
