Responsibilities:
ROLE OVERVIEW
The News Editor for the Sunday Independent leads the news coverage for Ireland’s biggest single-day news brand.
Working to the direction of the Editor of the Sunday Independent and in collaboration with the Group Head of News/Executive Editor, this role’s primary responsibility is the strategic direction of news gathering to set the national agenda and the week to week running of the news operation that follows that. In the fast changing news environment, the successful candidate is also responsible for developing new ways to break news and tell stories in both digital and in print formats, including investigations, and data-driven and visually-driven packages.
They are also responsible for careful forward planning to prepare for known upcoming events, and the development of unique, exclusive news and general news packages.
They will guide - day to day, week to week and month to month – the work of staff and contributors and will look to shape the news operation of the Sunday Independent to optimise its print and digital outputs.
The successful candidate will work closely with the wider Irish Independent Newsdesk team to ensure the timely delivery of signature journalism across our seven-day operation. They will also assist our Video and Audio teams in developing new ways of bringing our journalism to an audience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Developing, directing and delivering a new digital and print news strategy for the Sunday Independent. This strategy will – in collaboration with the editor, Sunday Independent – be set in the context of maximising the impact of Sunday Independent journalism among both online subscribers and print readers.
- Devising and developing new ways of news gathering for digital and in print for the existing audience and new audiences.
- Liaising with the video and audio teams
- Directing and briefing all internal sources of news and news gathering.
- Commissioning external news sources where necessary.
- Attending and/or running news conferences to develop ideas and news coverage.
- Creating and updating news lists, planning lists and any other relevant organisational tools.
- Working closely with the Audience Team to ensure news output is optimised and published at the right time to attract the largest engagement.
- Working with the Group Head of News and other news editors on newsroom projects as necessary.
- Implementing our mobile-first strategy in the newsroom and getting buy-in from reporters/correspondents
- Developing the internal and external news team at the Sunday Independent.
- Copy editing.
