Electroencephalogram (EEG) Technicians use specialized equipment and processes to monitor a patient’s nervous system activity. They set up, perform, and monitor EEG tests which record the electrical activity of a patient’s brain over time. EEG Technicians work under the supervision of epileptologists, neurologists, or other doctors.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Manual dexterity in order to place electrodes precisely and to operate recording equipment.
- Ability to push and maneuver EEG machine weighing 320 pounds and Evoked Potential machine weighing 420 pounds.
- Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
- Requires some exposure to communicable disease or body fluids.
Responsibilities:
- Perform electroencephalographic examinations.
- Select predetermined electrode combinations (montages) to obtain recordings, recognize artifacts and take appropriate steps to eliminate them.
- Monitor on the same apparatus, other variables such as electromyograms, electrocardiograms, electro-oculograms, respiration, etc.
- Observe patient with video recording equipment, ensure EEG and tape are lined up exactly, and check focus, lighting and microphone.
- Set-up patient for continuous monitoring at the bedside with video, if indicated.
- Instruct nursing caregivers on pushing event button and care of videos.
- Abstract relevant information from the patients’ clinical record and obtain additional information.
- Successfully obtain the American Board of Registration for Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) credentialing for a Registered EEG Technologist (R. EEG T.) within two years of hire
