Description:
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Children’s Learning Disability Service for two highly motivated and flexible Nursing Associates to join our small and dedicated team of Nurses and Occupational Therapists.
The team offers highly specialist community-based assessments and interventions for children and young people aged between 5-18 years, with diagnoses of moderate to severe learning disabilities, who engage in difficult to manage behaviour within their home environments.
The successful candidates will have experience of working directly with individuals with a learning disability, and ideally with children and young people, and their families. They will be committed to offering flexible and person centered services in order to meet the complex needs of our service users. They will have confidence in managing complex and sometimes challenging situations that may arise within the course of our work, and will be excellent communicators.
A range of specialist assessments and interventions are offered by the team, inclusive of Functional Behaviour Assessments, Sensory Integration Assessments, Sleep Assessments, Relationships and Sex Education and Emotional Well-being Interventions.
The successful candidates will support Nursing and Occupational Therapy colleagues in the completion of specialist assessments and interventions, and may, with supervision and support, hold a small caseload of children for whom they will coordinate interventions.
The team work across Essex, Southend and Thurrock, with a nominal base in Colchester. The successful candidates will be able and willing to easily travel within these areas to meet the needs of service users, and will be expected to work in a range of diverse settings including service users’ homes and school placements, as well as a range of other venues.

- To be responsible along with other members of the team for the implementation of interventions as outlined in service users’ care plans.
- Attending to the physical and psychological needs of the children and young people under the care of the nursing team.
- Act as an associate worker for service users.
- To take support the service in delivering the pathways promoted by the service including Mental Health and Challenging Behaviour.
- Ensure that accurate and objective information is recorded and signed by the appropriate member of staff.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with individual children and young people , relatives and carers are maintained by the nursing team. Contribute towards the formulation of care.
- Ensure effective and confidential communication at all times maintaining strict confidentiality with regard to any information concerning patients and colleagues.
- Demonstrate an awareness of the needs of carers of patients with learning disability.
- Be aware of the Mental Capacity Act and Mental Health Act and how to implement this safely.
- Be involved and contribute to the planning of each child’s care in accordance with agreed pathways, Building the Right Support and the Learning Disability Improvement Standards.
- Observe any changes in a child’s physical condition or mental state and document and report in an appropriate manner.
- Act in a relaxed manner, thereby contributing to the creation and maintenance of a calm and relaxed atmosphere/environment.
- Establish positive professional and appropriate relationships with patients adopting a non-judgemental approach. Always be prepared to listen and treat each child with respect and courtesy; valuing them as individuals.
- To participate in managerial supervision.
- Develop networking opportunities with other stakeholders to support care in the community and where hospital admission is required to support timely discharge.
- Develop networking opportunities with other mainstream mental health providers including inpatients; acute hospital and community services to support them to make their services accessible to children and young people with LD.
