POSITION SUMMARY:
This role reinforces practice skills, provides feedback based on pre-determined criteria/learning outcomes and provides technical expertise for students in the Lab and Simulation setting to become proficient in the performance of skills as established by Faculty for PSW, PN, BScN and Post-Graduate Programs and partner agencies (contracted services).
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Four-year Degree or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution in Nursing. Master’s degree in Education or Nursing preferred.
- Must maintain registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) with no practice restrictions.
- Minimum five (5) years’ recent experience in direct patient care in a variety of clinical care settings, including adult acute or long-term care.
- Experience in demonstrating procedures and the correct use of equipment/instruments.
SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:
- Effective interpersonal skills including diplomacy and solid observational skills.
- Excellent attention to detail along with solid analytical, research, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills to set priorities, meet deadlines and work independently, while adapting to changing situations.
- Ensure safety procedures and infection control are observed at all times and the ability to handle potentially hazardous substances.
- Able to lift between 20 kg or 44 lbs (i.e., boxes of supplies, equipment, mannequins, etc.).
- Demonstrated communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills at a professional level.

Responsibilities:
- Supports student skill development appropriate to the program and skills course and level of learner by reinforcing the skills demonstration taught by Faculty assigned to the course/class.
- Facilitates student skill acquisitions through demonstrations, feedback and posing reflective questions that promotes knowledge application.
- Reviews and promotes knowledge application through in-lab case study discussions developed by Faculty teaching in the course.
- Monitors and reports (to course Faculty/Instructors) students who appear to be struggling with skill performance and acquisition.
- Participates in assessment of student skills mastery as directed by Faculty (e.g., checklist/passports, OSCEs, etc.).
- Applies evidence-based learning strategies to support student skill acquisition and mastery in health care learners as directed by Faculty.
- Supports learners’ reflection on practice skill and performance within the Laboratory and Simulation in accordance with CNO Guidelines and Expectations (i.e., Individual or group debriefing sessions).
- Exhibits excellence in clinical skills and professionalism when interacting with student learners.
- Provides in-class support to Faculty members teaching clinical lab course content.
- Supports Faculty members in implementing the lab-skill activities according to the scheduled course module content and skills.
- Obtains supplies from the Dispensary, prepares equipment and sets-up labs appropriate to the scheduled skills lab, prior to lab start time.
- Ensures equipment is in good working order; cleans and re-packs reusable equipment and supplies after the lab class is completed.
- Reports to Dispensary Staff/Manager any concerns with equipment, facilities, or schedule.
- Other duties as assigned.
