The City of Edmonton is committed to fostering a culture of safety and well-being for all its employees and stakeholders. We are seeking an experienced and proactive OHS Advisor to join our team!
In this role, you will be responsible for spearheading the development, implementation, audit, and monitoring of our occupational health and safety program, in alignment with all relevant legislative requirements, industry best practices, and our City Standards. Your pivotal role will involve collaboration with various stakeholders, including senior leaders, supervisors, and branch partners to provide them with essential guidance, direction, and support on our occupational health and safety management program.

SKILLS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS:

  • Knowledge of municipalities, municipal governance, and unionized environments
  • Knowledge of internal and external audits, the Certificate of Recognition (COR) program, and/or ISO45001 Occupational Health and Safety Standard
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively engage with frontline workers, managers, project managers, and executives
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including Google applications such as Gmail, Gchat, Meets, Docs, Sheets and Slides
  • Strong time management and organizational skills to prioritize activities, adapt to change, and stay focused in a dynamic environment
  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills to effectively analyze situations and problems, identify root causes, and recommend solutions
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this position

Qualifications:

  • Degree, Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline with coursework in health and safety
  • Degree - Four (4) years experience, Diploma - Six (6) years of experience as an OHS professional, with loss prevention experience and working knowledge in areas such as process safety management, safety management system development, and implementation, incident/injury prevention, hazard identification, qualitative and quantitative risk analysi

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that all employees are supported with occupational health and safety subject matter expertise
  • Assist with OHS program and process development to address safety concerns, control hazards, and reduce injuries or property damage
  • Support, educate, and guide people leaders with decision-making regarding the application of City policies for maximum protection of liability
  • Help prepare the organization for an external audit(s)
  • Support in the coordination, planning, and execution of Leadership review events
  • Assess the effectiveness of the COE safety programs in reducing work-related incidents through pulse checks or internal auditing of specific program elements
  • Assist in promoting COE health and safety campaigns to inform and engage employees in participation
  • Act as a liaison between the different sections within the branch.
  • Contribute as a stakeholder to the review and development of COE safety standards
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on ideas and solutions
  • Perform an on-call function to assist with after-hour safety concerns
  • Perform other related duties as required
