MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Associates degree in bookkeeping or accounting with one to two years of previous experience and/or training involving tax preparation, bookkeeping, or general business accounting and general office work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Supervisory experience is desired.

Responsibilities:

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform administrative and clerical functions to process occupational tax filing. Explains, monitors, and enforces all aspects of the payroll and net profits tax returns filed as required by City Ordinance. Oversees the process of filing, processing, recording of payments, and verifying accuracy of related information.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs a variety of clerical tasks to support the process of payroll and net profits tax returns filed as required by City Ordinance; prepares mass mailings of tax forms; opens daily incoming mail; collects daily receipts of checks and forwards to collection department; sorts, organizes, and prioritizes tax returns for processing; files verified tax returns.
  • Completes technical tasks involving payroll and net profit tax return filing; verifies accuracy of submitted information; records receipts of tax payments into computer; audits individuals and businesses to determine accuracy of tax returns and compliance with ordinance.
  • Interprets and explains occupational license taxes to individuals and businesses; prepares annual renewal of occupational licenses and mails licenses to individuals and businesses; prepares and mails occupational license applications to individuals and businesses; records occupational license applications into software and issues licenses.
  • Calculates and assesses penalty and interest on late tax returns.
  • Contacts individuals and businesses with incorrect returns and arranges corrections.
  • Provides recommended changes to ordinances based on problems and issues.
  • May appear and testify in court proceedings.
  • Maintains current knowledge of taxes and tax rules pertaining to occupational licenses.
  • Assist in the hiring and training of all new employees.
  • Assist auditors.
  • Maintains regular and predictable in person attendance during regular business hours of the City of Henderson is required.
  • Must undergo and successfully complete drug test and alcohol screening prior to employment and undergo and successfully complete future drug test and/or alcohol screening pursuant to the City’s Drug and Alcohol policy.
