W e are looking for proactive, Occupational Therapists with post graduate experience within General Medicine and proven specific interest and clinical skills. and who are able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and an ability to support and influence MDT working within the setting.

To participate in the development and organisation of the efficient and effective provision of the occupational therapy service

  • To provide a high quality occupational therapy service to patients within the area of General Medicine by providing advanced assessment and treatment of patients who may have complex or chronic presentation.
  • To help ensure a cohesive service for the General Medical Team by ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to treatment and discharge planning.
  • To Supervise, direct and assess the work of junior occupational therapists, support workers and students.

To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work including the management of patients in your care and supporting less experienced staff to do likewise.
To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
To undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients with chronic and acute medical conditions, including those with highly complex presentations/multi pathologies, using sound clinical reasoning skills and assessment techniques.
Assess patients understanding of treatment proposals, gain informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
To formulate and deliver an individual specialist therapy treatment programme based on a sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and treatment options using advanced clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills.
Continually reassess/evaluate patient progress and alter treatment programmes as required.
To communicate effectively with team members, attend multidisciplinary team meetings e.g. ward rounds, case conference and complex discharge planning meetings, providing verbal and written reports on patient progress as required.
To effectively communicate with patients and their families/or carers, to progress and encourage compliance with their treatment and rehabilitation programmes. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating; for example patients who are deaf, blind, illiterate, dysphasic, have learning difficulties, have mental health problems, those experiencing difficulties accepting their diagnosis, and for those who may not speak English or it is their second language.
To refer patients to reablement teams and community therapy teams for therapy on discharge, advising on appropriate treatment regimes/ protocols where appropriate.
To accept clinical responsibility for a designated case load of patients, to organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
To manage clinical risk within own patient caseload
1.12 To work with the Trust clinical guidelines and RCOT guidelines and to have a good working knowledge of national and local standards and monitor own and others quality of practice as appropriate.
1.13 To ensure correct provision of equipment for patients to facilitate discharge.
1.14 To support patients through acceptance of stressful, complex physical conditions.
1.15 Consistently maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date treatment records for your patients, in line with legal (BAOT Standards of Occupational Therapy practice) and departmental requirements and communicate assessment and treatment results to the appropriate disciplines in the form of reports or letters when appropriate.
1.16 To be responsible for the safe and competent use of all equipment and patient aids/appliances and ensure that all students/ assistants attain competency prior to use offering training if necessary.
1.17 To be involved in the assessment for and provision of specialised equipment
