DEPARTMENT SUMMARY

The Department of Earth Sciences (ERTH) is a member of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) that supports significant research activities in many fields of Earth and Environmental Science. The Oregon Hazards Lab (OHAZ) is a research program within CAS-ERTH. OHAZ uses science, technology, and community engagement to understand, detect, and mitigate multi-hazards within the Pacific Northwest. OHAZ consists of over 25 academic and research faculty, undergraduate student employees, and administrative staff. OHAZ works with a broad consortium of collaborators within the University of Oregon and with external groups across the United States. Support for the program comes from a diverse range of sources that includes the State of Oregon, various Federal agencies (U.S. Geological Survey, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, Federal Emergency Management Agency, National Science Foundation), and Utility providers. Research activities span a variety of disciplines that enable complex field deployments, robust and secure data telecommunications, stakeholder outreach and community engagement, and leadership in regional hazard monitoring initiatives. POSITION SUMMARY

As a member of the Oregon Hazards Laboratory, you will be a critical part of a research group with a mission to use infrastructure, software, and novel technologies to protect all Oregonians from wildfires, earthquakes, floods, landslides, and other environmental hazards. The Research Data Scientist works closely with the Assistant Director of Systems and with external collaborators to advance the project goals that fall under the respective missions of OHAZ project development needs. Additional responsibilities include assisting with network operations, monitoring, and automation. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Systems. Tasks will include ensuring the continued functionality of platforms, developing and deploying new features, and exploring how to evaluate and integrate novel technologies such as third-party AI detection solutions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of work experience in systems and/or network administration.
  • Experience with routing protocols such as OSPF and BGP
  • Experience with Linux operating systems
  • Understanding of industry standard security practices.
  • Experience with virtual machines and cloud computing.
  • History of working with streaming video and/or the Axis camera API.
  • Experience ingesting, processing, and presenting research data from real-time monitoring systems.
  • Experience working in or with institutions of higher education, research centers, or within a complex organization.
