Description:

STAFF MANAGEMENT:

  • Co-ordination of the oncology nursing team to maintain efficient and optimal functioning of the department.
  • Direct supervision of veterinary nursing assistants and junior nurses in oncology.
  • Liaise with COM and HOD to ensure optimal staffing levels are met:
  • Ensure nurses are updating leave calendar once leave is approved, TL then responsible for updating Ezy Vet.
  • Arrange appropriate cover for the department when staff are on annual leave or redeployment of staff when required e.g. department closure days / if the hospital requires.
  • Assist nursing staff with clinical duties on the floor when required to do so.
  • Reviewing of rosters to enable effective shift structuring to allow nurses to complete non-clinical duties as outlined in job descriptions.
  • Co-ordination of nurses and intern lunch breaks, facilitating set times for each job role if required.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels are met for off-site radiation, liaise with GR.
  • Ensure overtime is in line with individual contracts of employment.
  • Ensure nursing team are dressed appropriately and presentable to the public (branded scrubs, hair tied back, minimal jewellery, appropriate nail care).
  • Responsible for induction, training and continual development of nursing staff, creation of competency task list.
  • Encouragement of clinical education and progressive learning, organising conference leave where applicable.
  • Create and manage a CE roster for the whole department.
  • Organise nurse meetings every 8 weeks, write up meeting minutes and form meeting agendas.
  • Attend RVN and VNA development reviews as required, provide encouragement and objective reviews of performance in collaboration with HOD, COM, GM and human resources.
  • Ensure nursing staff are aware of, have read and follow clinical standard operating procedures and Vetpartners policies.
  • Review and update nursing job descriptions as applicable and liaise with HOD, COM with the recruitment process.
  • Collaborate with other departments in an efficient and respectful manner to achieve the best possible outcome for all patients in our care.

Responsibilities:

CLINICAL DUTIES:

  • Admission of patients for veterinary assessment, chemotherapy, and other procedures.
  • Obtaining and discussing recent patient history, current medications and doses, the plan for the individual patient for the day, and estimate of cost involved.

Administrative duties:

  • Oversee and manage urgent referral waitlist daily in liaison with clinicians.
  • Responsible/first point of call for consultation co-ordination and scheduling:
  • Emergency/urgent oncology initial consults, including those presenting via ECC
  • Phone consultations – ensuring that all client and patient details have been entered into Ezy Vet, particularly email address. Ensure consultation fee has been paid before time of consultation.
  • Ensure clinical summaries are complete and sent to referring vets/owners. Must be completed on a weekly basis for the records 1-2 weeks prior.
  • Responsible for pending invoices in collaboration with client services.
  • Support referring veterinarians and clients with department updates or changes to services.
  • Responsible for following up remote patients and create procedural guidelines for remote rechecks/nadirs.
  • Review chemotherapy costs (long term project):
  • Determine an appropriate single cost that can be applied for all chemotherapy treatments (regardless of size or drug) that allows Oncology department to maintain/grow current revenue.
  • Create anti-nausea, staging and cardiac evaluation packages
