We are Europe’s research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and
interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1900 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.
Our mission is to perform basic research in molecular biology; train scientists at all levels; offer vital services to scientists in the public and private sectors within the member states; develop new instruments and methods; and engage actively in technology transfer. The development of enabling technology is supported by the electronic and mechanical workshops. These workshops are part of EMBL’s Scientific Services and provide support to the scientists, specialized in a wide spectrum of areas such as automation, control, measurement, data acquisition and designing of new equipment to meet special custom requirements.
At our site in Heidelberg, we are looking for an operational manager of our electronic workshop who oversees the day-to-day activities of the workshop and supervises a small team of electronic engineers, and contributes to developing innovative technology in collaboration with EMBL’s scientific groups and the mechanical workshop.

Your role

  • Organizing the day-to-day workshop activities
  • Supervising a small team of electronic engineers and trainees
  • Being responsible for project planning and development as well as budgeting and reporting
  • Developing state-of-the-art custom electronic equipment for scientific experiments
  • Develop and maintain a close collaborative relationship with EMBL’s mechanical workshop as well as its various scientific groups

Contract duration: 3 years (renewable)
Grading: 6 or 7; depending on qualifications and experience (monthly salary starting from 4.4k EUR after tax + other paid benefits)

You have

  • Electronic engineer degree or equivalent with several years of experience in designing, assembling and testing electronic devices
  • Enthusiasm for the development of cutting-edge, challenging technologies and custom solutions for life sciences
  • Experience in a similar customer-oriented management position with budget and staff responsibilities
  • Good knowledge of microcontrollers (ATMEL, PSOC) and FPGA systems (Xilinx) for the development of fully operational devices (hardware, firmware and software)
  • Excellent programming skills (C/C++ for embedded systems, LabVIEW, Python, Node-Red, Matlab)
  • Expertise in high-frequency analog and digital design, simulation, PCB design (preferably in Altium), and proficient soldering skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously handling high workloads with a small team
  • Good mechanical skills with knowledge of CAD software (SolidWorks)
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Fluency both in English and German

You might also have

  • Previous experience in a similar role, ideally in an international environment is advantageous
