Role Summary
Operational Resilience is a key area of focus across Northern Trust – our ability to remain resilient is a top priority for our clients and regulators. Building on the work being done globally, we are creating a new role to oversee the implementation of operational resilience requirements across all Australian Asset Servicing legal entities.
Reporting to the Asset Servicing APAC Entity Head of Controls, the Operational Resiliency Specialist will work with senior executives to ensure that we implement and maintain standards and that Australian regulatory requirements are met. They will act as the interface with the Asset Servicing Resiliency Office, helping to ensure that the global framework is delivered locally. They will also play a role in Australia legal entity governance and develop into an SME with both internal and external stakeholders.

What you will do

  • Responsible for overseeing the coordination and governance of Northern Trust’s Operational Resilience programs including maintaining Critical Operations (Important Business Services/IBS) across all Australian Asset Servicing legal entities.
  • Member of the Melbourne Operational Resilience and Outsourcing Committee (MOROC) working group and, initially, a standing attendee of MOROC. Maintains oversight, with the support of the Asset Servicing and Technology Resiliency Offices, of the Business Services Lifecycle in accordance with the Corporate Operational Resilience Policy and Standard for relevant Australian legal entities.
  • Coordinating the identification/assessment of Business Services by legal entity; Coordinating the confirmation of IBS by legal entity; Coordinating value chain and independency analysis required to deliver each IBS, identifying resiliency vulnerabilities that could cause a breach of the IBS impact tolerance; Coordinating the process to define the impact tolerance for each IBS; and Coordinating business testing of the ability to remain within stated impact tolerance objectives in the event of a severe but plausible disruption to operations.
  • Ensure the Business Continuity Programs across all Australian Asset Servicing legal entities are assessed against applicable local and global regulatory obligations, and any identified gaps are resolved in order to demonstrate the legal entities’ compliance
  • Facilitates the approval of IBS and impact tolerances by the IBS owner and Head of Branch / CEO at legal entity level
  • Prepares and supports the facilitation of governance to enable senior management to steer the decision of relevant Australian legal entities towards continuous strengthening of resilience by:
  • Developing a Critical Operations Register using available sources, tools and data points
  • Coordinating and producing baseline legal entity operational resiliency metrics with IBS owners, Asset Servicing & Technology Resiliency Offices and Risk partners, Producing legal entity reporting which enables prompt identification and escalation of material operational resilience issues at an aggregate legal entity level, and Coordinating aggregation and presentation of legal entity key risks and escalations to relevant stakeholders and governance forums.
  • Maintains the self-assessment documentation for each legal entity (including overseeing the completion of specific sections by the different IBS owners / business functions).
  • Engages with IBS owners to promote consistent setting of resiliency risk appetite by legal entities.
  • Performs and documents assessments of risk acceptances and exceptions, and obtains approval from relevant senior executives and risk governance forums for any deviation from the requirements of operational resilience policies (i.e. when no manual workaround or contingency plan exists) on the basis that they are within legal entity / business unit risk appetite.
  • Participates in lessons learned from internal and external events, consultations or regulatory changes that may require a reassessment of relevant Australian legal entity resilience set-up.
  • Supports and promotes a resiliency culture within relevant Australian legal entities, including engaging in the development of training on operational resilience.
  • Supports client engagement and due diligence requests in relation to Australian Asset Servicing legal entity IBS.

About You

  • Good understanding of risk management practices and how they apply in Financial Services organisations including the impact of regulation on operational resiliency matters
  • Understanding of local regulators (e.g: ASIC, APRA, AUSTRAC)
  • Understanding of business continuity
  • Stakeholder management, with proven ability to direct virtual teams of senior stakeholders to successful outcomes
  • Pragmatic, logical and rigorous approach
  • Proven track-record in presenting to senior management with excellent written and oral presentation abilities
  • Knowledge of operational resiliency including disaster/business recovery, business continuity management, 3rd party vendor/outsourcing, corporate risk policies and standards
  • Analytical skills, including the ability to present ideas clearly to others and to identify and escalate issues of concern to management, as appropriate
  • Ability to drive to execution
  • Self-motivated, curious and able to work autonomously
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Visio / Business Process Notation (high desirable)
