Summary of Job Duties:
You will be responsible for providing forensic anthropology expertise in the form of skeletal analysis, consultation, report writing and collaboration with the forensic pathology team. Your job duties will include examining and documenting human and non-human skeletal material; producing biological profile information and detailed data-driven comprehensive reports in a timely manner; ensuring compliance with internal standard operating procedures and national best practices for the forensic anthropology discipline; and maintaining an accurate inventory of unidentified decedents in the Clackamas facility. Your job will also entail maintenance and revision of all unidentified decedent profiles in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs); overseeing the entry of all unidentified decedents into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC); and coordinating the entry of all unidentified decedents into the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP).
You will be responsible for representing the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office when collaborating with local, state, federal, private, and tribal entities regarding death investigations, human identification and forensic anthropology casework. You will also participate in SMEO-sponsored technical trainings and educational in-services.
You will report directly to the Chief Medical Examiner and work in partnership with all Deputy State Medical Examiners in the performance of these duties.
Minimum Qualifications/Eligibility Requirements:
Doctorate Degree in Skeletal Anatomy, Forensic Anthropology, Biological Anthropology, or a closely related field AND at least two years of contemporary Forensic Anthropology case work including data-driven comprehensive biological profile reports.
OR
A Master’s Degree in Skeletal Anatomy, Forensic Anthropology, Biological Anthropology, Natural Science, Physical Science, Forensic Science, or a closely related field AND at least five years of contemporary Forensic Anthropology case work including data-driven comprehensive biological profile reports.
OR
A Bachelor’s Degree in Forensic Anthropology, Biological Anthropology, Natural Science, Physical Science, Forensic Science, or a closely related field AND at least five years of experience in a death investigation/ medical examiner/coroner environment to include contemporary Forensic Anthropology case work and the creation of data-driven comprehensive biological profile reports.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Skills:

  • Proficient and proactive in an independent environment; able to complete tasks, technical casework, and reports with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow current research and methodologies regarding human osteology, biological profile estimations, trauma assessment and forensic anthropology advancements AND incorporate them into current standard operating procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of optimal biological sampling triage and sample excision techniques for advanced DNA analysis.
  • Must always exhibit the utmost respect for the decedents entrusted to our care.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills and be able to work effectively and collaboratively with other agencies.
