Description:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS ESSENTIAL TO JOB FUNCTIONS:

The Payroll Technician receives limited supervision from the Sr. Manager of Bus Transportation or Manager of Bus Transportation. Abnormal hours and/or spilt shifts may be required; must work outside regular service and business hours as required. Considerable knowledge of the service area, routes and of types of equipment. Considerable knowledge of HRT policies and procedures, rules and regulations affecting transit operation. Knowledge of union contract provisions affecting operator’s hours, pay and benefits. Ability to work independently. Ability to concentrate for long periods of time. Detail oriented. Efficient in following routines & procedures. Ability to speak clearly and concisely, to understand views and concerns of others, to solve operator problems and to take effective action. Ability to enter, correct and retrieve data using spreadsheets and word-processing software. Ability to use independent judgment and initiative in accordance with the accepted policies and procedures when faced with difficult or emergency situations. Ability to work in HASTUS and PeopleSoft HCM Payroll module with minimum supervision. Knowledge of the Drug and Alcohol Policy and regulations.

REQUIRED SOFTWARE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ESSENTIAL TO JOB FUNCTIONS:

Proficiency in using computer systems and the listed software applications associated with performance of assigned work is essential. Basic problem-solving skills associated with software applications used is expected. Software usage relevant to job duties will be evaluated.
Software applications:
MS Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, HASTUS, PeopleSoft HCM Payroll Module; proficient in HASTUS and PeopleSoft HCM Payroll module is required.

TRAINING AND/OR EDUCATION:

Graduation from high school or GED

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

1 year of experience in payroll, accounting or closely related work. 1 year of transit experience and/or equivalent experience and education required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position is classified as non-essential personnel.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintains attendance and leave records; verifies and corrects leave and work hours data in HASTUS.
  • Maintains daily time and attendance records for operators; processes requests for sickness and absences; advises appropriate personnel of circumstances to be investigated.
  • Bi-weekly processing of the merge (operator payroll).
  • Verifies HASTUS time created to time transferred to PeopleSoft HCM for accuracy.
  • Enters data into computerized databases.
  • Maintains attendance cards.
  • Checks and verifies operators hours.
  • Tracks operator vacation and personal time, sick leave, leave of absences and FMLA leave;
  • Maintains a knowledge of the bargaining unit contract and work rules;
  • Keeps the Manager of Bus Transportation informed of any problems through effective communication.
  • Maintain working relationship with Operators, Supervisors, and other personnel.
  • Performs a variety of specialized clerical and administrative duties in support of the department.
  • Prepares daily and special reports as required.
  • Organizes department files and manages records created and received in compliance with the Hampton Roads Transit Records Management Policy and Procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining a general awareness of HRT’s EMS
  • Responsible for handling all related job responsibilities in accordance to HRT’s Environmental Policy, relevant EMS Standard Operating Procedures, and Emergency Management Plan
  • Perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect one’s self, fellow employees, and the public from injury or harm.
  • Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures and policies.
  • Performs other duties as required
