Description:
POSITION SUMMARY:
Assist with providing quality childcare in after-school outreach sites located throughout the city by teaching values, ensuring safety and facilitating structured play and educational activities with the children, in accordance with state requirements and YMCA policy. Assist with providing a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on youth development, including the YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, caring, and faith.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Implements curriculum within the established guidelines.
- Distribution of snacks to children during snack time.
- Assists children with homework.
- Facilitates both formal and informal play within the center and outdoors.
- Supervises children under the direction of the Site Lead.
- Assists in creating daily/weekly lesson plans.
- Collects data for daily reports and maintains program records.
- Assists Site Lead and counselor(s) with the set-up and breakdown of activity centers and cleaning of the program area.
- Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
- Maintains positive relations with children, parents, school personnel, and other staff.
- Acts as a role model to the children by exemplifying the YMCA’s five core values.
- Report suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
- Follows mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements.
- Meet timelines and deadlines related to supporting systems and employee compliance. Example includes but are not limited to Kronos Workforce Ready for review and approval of time sheets.
Qualifications:

- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- At least 18 years of age.
- CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention trainings.
- Minimum one year previous experience working with children in a day camp.
- Experience preferred in on or more of the following areas: outdoor living, archery, boating, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games.
- Ability to plan, organize, and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities
- Previous experience with diverse populations.
- Current record of tuberculosis examination and/or current local health department regulations, examinations, and/or immunization as required by the local or State Department of Health.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with demonstrated interested in the welfare of children; prior childcare or baby-sitting experience is preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
