Description:

University of Pittsburgh Physicians is hiring a full-time Supervisor Physician Assistant or Acute Care Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner to support the Neurosurgery department at UPMC Mercy. This role is critical to ensuring the highest quality of care for our adult neurosurgical patients, working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to manage patients on the inpatient floors, perform neurosurgical consults, and oversee both inpatient and outpatient APP teams. The UPMC Department of Neurosurgery is one of the largest in the United States. The schedule is rotating with day shifts and weekends.

    Licensure, Education, Certifications, and Clearances

PA:

  • A graduate of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the physician assistant (ARC-PA) is required
  • BS or MS candidate is preferred
  • Experience as a physician assistant and/or experience in a clinical setting is preferred
  • Current state PA license certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required
  • Current CPR certification is required
  • Act 34 Clearance required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) OR Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Responsibilities:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inpatient Care Management:
  • Collaborate with neurosurgery residents and attending physicians to manage patient care on inpatient floors.
  • Conduct thorough patient assessments, develop treatment plans, and monitor progress.
  • Perform daily rounds, ensuring comprehensive and timely patient care.
  • Coordinate with nursing staff and other healthcare professionals to facilitate patient care and discharge planning.
  • Neurosurgical Consults:
  • Perform neurosurgical consults for adult patients across the hospital.
  • Evaluate patients, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and develop appropriate treatment plans in collaboration with attending neurosurgeons.
  • Leadership and Supervision:
  • Lead and supervise both the inpatient and outpatient APP teams, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure seamless coordination between inpatient and outpatient services, optimizing patient care and resource utilization.
  • Participate in the recruitment, onboarding, and training of new APPs.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, providing feedback and developing improvement plans as necessary.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work closely with attending physicians, residents, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure integrated and comprehensive patient care.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with all stakeholders, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Serve as a liaison between the APP team and other departments, addressing any issues or concerns that may arise.
  • Administrative Duties:
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the neurosurgery APP team.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the development of best practices for patient care.

PURPOSE:

The Supervisor, APP is a Physician Assistant or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner and a member of the care delivery team. The Supervisor, APP is responsible to set the standards for the level and quality of care. The Supervisor, APP coordinates and oversees all physician assistant and certified nurse practitioner functions. The Supervisor, APP has responsibility, authority and accountability for the provision of care through supervision by and collaboration with a physician. The Supervisor, APP manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication and collaboration with all team members. The role of the Supervisor, APP encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration and supervision. The Supervisor, APP establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The Supervisor, APP demonstrates a commitment to the community and to their healthcare profession.
