We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic Band 6 nurse to join the Paediatric Nephrology Nurse Specialist team at Southampton Children’s Hospital for 4 month fixed term period. The successful candidate must have experience working in Paediatric Nephrology and ideally have attended a recognised renal course. Competence in peritoneal dialysis is essential and haemodialysis skill desirable. The CNS service covers core working hours; there is some flexibility in shift patterns.
The Paediatric Nephrology service accepts patients from across the Wessex region; a population of approximately 8.4million. We have inpatient beds on a shared specialism ward, with a separate haemodialysis unit housing 4 stations. In addition we have a large Chronic Kidney Disease out patient population and an established shared care, transplant service.

Southampton Children’s hospital is a 115 bedded hospital catering for both local and regional children from the Wessex Region including the Channel Isles. Southampton’s Children’s Hospital is a Major Paediatric Trauma Centre in the region.
The children’s hospital provides specialist intensive and high dependency care, regional cardiac, neurological and neuro surgery, regional orthopaedic, urology, general , renal and ear nose and throat surgery and is the regional oncology centre. The children hospital has a dedicated children’s emergency department, day surgical / medical unit, children’s outpatients and Bursledon House which is a specialist unit treating a range of conditions. Southampton Children’s Hospital is a centre for paediatric research projects.
Within the site also sits our tertiary level 3 medical and surgical neonatal unit.
Our specialist paediatric consultants, nurses and wider healthcare teams offer a wide range of diagnosis, treatment and support facilities for children and their parents.

What you’ll do
Working with the existing multidisciplinary team you will be responsible for:
- Supporting patients with stage 3, 4 and 5 Chronic Kidney Disease providing specialist nursing care to the patients and their families.
- Dealing with sensitive and distressing situations, managing these is an appropriate manner
- Managing your own work load, assessing and prioritising with agreed specialist guidelines
- Contributing to the development of the specialist service, ensuring documentation and programmes of care are updated regularly.
- Ensuring documentation is completed to Trust policy and in accordance with NMC requirements
- Participating in the on-call rota (advice only) and having involvement with PD and/or transplant clinics
- Building good working relationships with the multidisciplinary team and providing support to staff on the ward
