This posting is for one (1) Temporary Full-time position which may continue until March 31, 2025
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) requires an organized professional to provide exceptional paralegal services to the Professional Standards Branch. The successful candidate will perform complex and independent legal work in the context of a variety of legal proceedings including, Edmonton Police Commission (EPC) service appeals, Disciplinary Hearings, and criminal disclosure requests. The position is expected to be able to perform such work with minimal supervision while working within strict deadlines. Responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing records and preparing disclosures for, Edmonton Police Commission appeals, Crown disclosure requests, Disciplinary Hearings, Edmonton Police Service FOIPP Unit inquiries and responses to prosecutors’ requests.
- Managing the disciplinary hearings and creating and maintaining a filing system relating to such matters.
- Preparing the McNeil packages for sworn members of the Edmonton Police Service, and responding to inquiries relating to the records.
- Conducting member checks for sworn members of the Edmonton Police Service.
- Reviewing and responding to correspondence and drafting documentation.
- Ensuring that all deadlines are diarized and met.
- Acting as contact person for the interested parties involved in the disciplinary hearing, including arranging court reporters and reporting on the outcome of the proceedings to different Units within the Edmonton Police Service.
- Assisting in the preparation of documents for disciplinary proceedings including bi-monthly updates.
- Preparing correspondence and other administrative assistance for Professional Standards Branch Counsel and Inspector.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Successful completion of a recognized two (2) year Legal Assistant Diploma program and three years of progressively responsible legal experience in the area of Corporate Law (included contract and construction procedures) and/or Litigation Law (included collection procedures) as required..
- Analyzing and redacting documents for privilege, confidentiality, relevance and EPS security issues.
- Considerable knowledge of court procedures and practices in Provincial Court and Court of Kings Bench.
- Knowledge of the Police Act an asset.
- Experience with IAPro is an asset.
- Proven time management skills, and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
