WORK EXPERIENCE

Minimum five (5) years of professional paralegal experience performing job-relevant legal responsibilities, such as experience with medical malpractice claims/litigation, litigation holds, and subpoena responses. Experience with all aspects of medical malpractice claims/litigation in Michigan preferred Experience with electronic medical records and, in particular, the EPIC system preferred Experience with hospital policies and procedure, hospital or health care operations, and relevant laws and regulations preferred

EDUCATION

Certified Paralegal or Bachelors degree in relevant field.

Responsibilities:

GENERAL PURPOSE

The University of Michigan’s Office of the Vice President and General Counsel (OGC) is seeking an experienced senior paralegal to support the work of OGC attorneys servicing the University’s fully integrated academic medical center (“Michigan Medicine”) and its state-wide clinical enterprise (“U-M Health”). Specifically, this paralegal would focus on supporting attorneys managing medical malpractice claims and litigation for the U-M Health Regional Network, which includes U-M Health Sparrow and U-M Health West. Central to the paralegal’s role will be supporting attorneys managing medical malpractice claims and litigation (including all aspects of medical malpractice claims, litigation holds, and preservation notices); and collecting, reviewing, and managing documents that are responsive to subpoenas, investigations, and third-party litigation requests. This paralegal will also collaborate with other health-system paralegals in triaging health care-related inquiries made by U-M Health workforce members to the OGC and will serve as a member of the entire, University-wide OGC team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Work closely with, and under the direction of, supervising attorneys on all aspects of medical malpractice claims and litigation, LARA investigations, and third-party litigation;
  • Maintain the claims/litigation database and ensure reserves and other information is kept up to date;
  • Generate litigation holds and preservation notices;
  • Facilitate subpoena/deposition/meeting requests;
  • Coordinate expert and treater witness reviews;
  • Support the preparation and participation in assigned U-M Health risk related committees;
  • Prepare and submit court filings as directed by attorneys;
  • Triage legal and risk inquiries from U-M Health Regional Network employees;
  • Organize and maintain electronic files and databases
