THE OPPORTUNITY

The Ministry’s Parks Division has an exciting opportunity in the Landscape Protection Unit. The unit plays a pivotal role within the ministry by providing leadership, oversight, and direction for landscape protection across provincial parks. As a dedicated team, we work collaboratively to protect and conserve provincial park ecosystems. We are seeking a highly skilled, strategic, and proactive team player to join us as a Park Forest Ecosystem Specialist.
We are seeking a proactive, self-directed, and results-oriented team player. Reporting to the Park Forest Ecologist of the Landscape Protection Unit, located in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, the primary role of the Park Forest Ecosystem Specialist will be to provide technical support in the development and implementation of forestry and wildland fire management plans for provincial park lands.

YOU WILL HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF:

• Knowledge of boreal forest ecosystems, forest health, biodiversity, and management principles, including silviculture systems, best practices for ecosystem health, and forest management planning in Saskatchewan parklands;
• Expertise in risk tree assessment, wildland fire management (including suppression, prescribed fire, and FireSmart), and the management of forest pests, diseases, and invasive species, including assessment, treatment, and monitoring techniques;
• The ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships and facilitate effective engagement;
• The ability to effectively write, analyze and research and develop options and solutions;
• The ability to explain technical and non-technical information, both in writing and verbally, to a variety of stakeholders, Indigenous groups, and the public with varying levels of understanding; and
• Knowledge of relevant acts and programs, government planning, and decision-making processes.
  Typically, the knowledge and skills for this position would be obtained through the successful completion of a Diploma or Degree program in forestry, resource management, or other related fields of study and several years of progressively responsible experience with forest/wildland fire management or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The candidate should be a Registered Forestry Professional or be eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Forest Technician (RPFT) or Registered Professional Forester (RPF) with the Association of Saskatchewan Forest Professionals (ASFP).
  The successful candidate will be required to travel to remote locations to conduct work activities, work irregular hours, conduct field studies, surveys, and assessments, and will be required to operate four-wheel drive trucks, all-terrain vehicles, and small motorized boats. A valid class five driver’s license is required. The successful applicant will be required to travel occasionally in small fixed-winged and rotary-winged aircraft to perform work duties.
