Job Description:
Berklee College of Music invites applications for a Part-Time Faculty member in the Africana Studies Department, housed in the Africana Studies Division. The successful candidate will teach remote/online sections of Music of the African Diaspora, a course that examines the impact of the African Diaspora on music worldwide. The position will begin Fall 2024 and may be renewed.
The successful part-time faculty member will report to the Chair of Africana Studies. The ideal candidate will have content expertise and will be a skilled educator. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have a teaching philosophy that articulates a commitment to student-centered and cultural competency. The ideal candidate will be able to articulate their commitment to Africana Studies and their particular approach to training creative artists.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Advanced degree in ethnomusicology, musicology, Africana Studies, African Diasporic Studies or Black Music Studies (Ph.D. preferred)
- Research specialization in African, African Diasporic, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latinx, Black, and/ or African American creative expression (with emphasis in music)
- Minimum of three academic years of collegiate teaching experience
- Record of creative scholarship/ professional activity
- Demonstration of collaboration and participation in professional organizations
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Command of technology to support professional work as well as to advance teaching & learning
- Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging
Responsibilities:
- Teach sections of Music of the African Diaspora and/ or Global Diasporic Musics, as assigned
- Attend Department meetings and contribute to the Africana Studies Department, Africana Studies Division and Berklee at large.
- Engage in professional development to maintain and continually advance teaching skills
- Attend College-wide events (e.g., Opening Day, Berklee Teachers on Teaching) and follow all other guidelines per the Faculty Contract Agreement
- Other duties as assigned
