Description:
PARTNER 20, SOFTWARE ENGINEER (DATA)
Founded in Silicon Valley in 2009 by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, Andreessen Horowitz (aka a16z) is a venture capital firm that backs bold entrepreneurs building the future through technology. We are stage agnostic. We invest in seed to venture to growth-stage technology companies, across AI, bio + healthcare, consumer, crypto, enterprise, fintech, games, and companies building toward American dynamism. a16z has $44B in assets under management across multiple funds.
We’ve established a team that is defined by respect for the entrepreneur and the company-building process; we know what it’s like to be in the founder’s shoes. We’ve invested in companies like Affirm, Airbnb, Coinbase, Databricks, Devoted Health, Insitro, Figma, GitHub, Instacart, OpenSea, Roblox, Stripe, and Substack. Our team is at the forefront of new technology, helping founders and their companies impact and change the world.

- 6+ yrs. professional software engineering experience
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure deployments on GCP, AWS, and/or Azure
- Experience with production SQL and NoSQL (ideally Elasticsearch) database management
- Professional development of containerized services and use of container orchestration systems, ideally Kubernetes
- Deep knowledge of Python3 – or another backend language and willingness to learn
- Experience in rapid iteration and consistent excellence in process, ideally at a successful early-stage startup or as a senior IC at a larger company
- Strong problem-solving skills and mathematical intuition
- Bonus: excited about advances in LLM space, ideally already using them
The anticipated salary range for this role is between $350,000 - $408,000, actual starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope.

Responsibilities:
You will join a fully-functional team of autonomous, senior ICs developing internal software tools for the firm’s investing and operations teams. You should be an experienced, detail-oriented, and focused software engineer with an enthusiasm for building feature-rich, data-driven applications. Your primary responsibilities will involve the identification, acquisition, and normalization of alternative data sources for use in our products. You will be required to design and implement performant backend systems that operate securely and at scale.
The BUILD software team operates in the mode of an internal startup. We own a tight feedback loop with our users and take on requests from all corners of the firm. This is a high-visibility role that requires a clear architectural vision, the desire to code, exacting communication skills, and the ability to engage and educate our firm on the technology we are developing and shipping.
