THIS POSITION IS A HYBRID ROLE REQUIRING A MINIMUM OF 3 DAYS IN OFFICE.

We are seeking a Patent Prosecution Clerk to join our leading and growing Intellectual Property Department in our Ottawa office. This full-time position is open to candidates with an avid interest in Patent Prosecution, including the legal and clerical steps and processes required to bring a patent application to grant. Candidates with experience working in Intellectual Property would be an asset, however, we are open to on-the-job training.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain a comprehensive docketing, reminder, and bring-forward system to ensure that all deadlines and due dates associated with patent prosecution are met and that all relevant deadlines are brought to the attention of legal professionals.
  • Data entry and review.
  • Communicate with U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) on behalf of clients and legal professionals regarding status, maintenance and advancement of patent examination and prosecution.
  • Draft correspondence, letters, and memos for review by a legal professional.
  • Communicate directly with clients such as reporting routine matters.
  • Reporting Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) notices, and opening files.
  • Filing and reporting PCT/foreign applications (updating database with deadlines).
  • Reporting examination, convention year, foreign Office Actions, working requirements and their subsequent reminders.
  • Reporting notice of allowance, forwarding issued patents.
  • Administering formality requirements.
  • Processing requisitions, voluntary amendments, sequence listings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
    Position Requirements
    Education and Experience
    An undergraduate degree or diploma in business administration, law clerk or similar would be an asset. However, an equivalent combination of education, training and on-the-job experience will be acceptable.
