Description:

JOB SUMMARY:

The Patient Account Specialist is responsible for processing, organizing, maintaining and
tracking patient medical billing information for the efficient operation of the healthcare organization.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Ability to read, understand and follow written instructions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least two years related experience (preferred).
  • Experience working in EPIC (preferred).
  • Minimum of one year of general clerical and computer experience preferred with some exposure to medical terminology.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Sitting for 7-8 hours/day.
  • Requires eye-hand coordination, finger dexterity.
  • Must be able to view computer screens for long periods.

Responsibilities:

  • Greet customers in polite, prompt, helpful manner. Answers phones in pleasant manner and deals with customer needs expeditiously.
  • Function as a contributing member in a team environment treating co-workers with courtesy, professionalism and respect.
  • Perform duties in manner that protects the privacy of patient’s medical information.
  • Accurately and efficiently organize and process patient medical billing records on a daily basis.
  • Accurately and efficiently enter information into the electronic patient billing system for the purpose of maintaining accurate billing information and tracking payments to ensure the financial health of the healthcare organization.
  • Accurately and efficiently set up new patient accounts in the electronic patient billing system.
  • Accurately and efficiently update patient information for existing accounts in the electronic patient billing system.
  • Routinely verify patient insurance coverage.
  • Perform follow-up with insurance companies to check the status of unpaid claims, denied claims, or improperly processed claims.
  • Prepare bank deposit and deposit summary sheets after balancing charges, payment and receipts.
  • Perform follow-up on accounts until zero balance is achieved or the accounts are turned over for collection.
  • Assist with coding and error resolution.
  • Answers telephone inquiries and respond to patient and insurance company questions about their account in a helpful, courteous and professional manner.
  • Assist with filing patient insurance and other related forms.
  • Receive payments from patients, provide account balances and issues receipts.
  • Process, codes, balances and posts over the counter and over the phone payments.
  • Accurately and efficiently sort, retrieve and file patient medical billing records.
  • Safeguard the privacy and confidentiality of all patient protected health information in the performance of job functions.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Assist in care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.
  • Perform as a team player by assisting other staff and assuming additional duties and responsibilities as needed or as requested.
  • The job holder must demonstrate competencies applicable to the job position.
