Description:
The Patient Care Assistant provides critical customer service support to the nursing unit. Responsibilities include assisting patients in need of ambulatory assistance, visiting patients regularly, and assisting patients and families by responding to their needs in a timely and caring manner.
- Patient Care
- Makes rounds on patients on an hourly basis, assessing and responding to patient and family needs in a timely, caring, and respectful manner. Ensures call light is within reach of patients and blackjack cable is connected, responds to it promptly, and directs requests to appropriate personnel. Ensures rooms are stocked with essential patient care supplies.
- Helps patients in need of ambulatory assistance by assisting/accompanying them to the restroom and aiding in perineal care under the direction of the patient’s clinical team.
- Performs various tasks to increase the comfort of and service to the patients, including organizing personal items in their room, passing linens/water/ice, and sitting and visiting with the patients.
- Assists nursing staff with obtaining supplies and equipment to facilitate patient care. Assists with room set up for new admissions.
- Assists nursing support staff during feeding times by bringing and returning the passing out meal trays to patients.
- Sits with patients who need constant supervision to prevent harm.
- Transports patients to inpatient rooms, radiology, and other areas in a hospital setting.
- Obtaining vital signs on patients every 2 hours and as needed.
- Quality
- Monitors Nursing Station for delivery of patient care items and delivers them to the nurse or patients’ room in a timely manner.
- Maintains supply of items in the unit nourishment room. Checks for expiration date and cleanliness of surfaces and refrigerator, including temperature monitoring.
- Cleans soiled equipment and returns to appropriate area for storage.
- Enters maintenance work orders for unit needs.
- Collaboration and Partnership
- Assists other support personnel as needed, i.e. helping Clerks with phones during peak hours and helping CNAs with care of bed-bound patients.
- Observes and adheres to all departmental and hospital policies and procedures, and follows all safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards.

- Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or equivalent.
SPECIAL SKILLS/TRAINING:
