Description:
1 YEAR OF DIRECT PATIENT CARE EXPERIENCE PREFERRED.
Unit: 4 MRIU is a medical/respiratory intermediate and trauma step-down unit. It cares for patients with trauma and respiratory complications needing advanced, but not critical, care. Services include Bipap, high flow oxygen, CPAP, Aquanox therapy, dialysis, mechanical ventilation, and more.
Responsibilities:
- Provides patient care, including assisting with procedures and activities of daily living.
- Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
- Provides feedback to the RN and reports changes in patient status.
- Performs core nursing assistant responsibilities (e.g., blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, Foley care).
- Completes at least four additional tasks (e.g., phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal).
- Reports equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department. Establishes effective communication and professional relationships with other departments.
- Contributes to unit activities, including responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
- Receives feedback constructively and identifies learning needs. Provides patient and family instruction under the direction of the RN.
- Applies, monitors, and removes patient restraints as per protocol. Adheres to all patient care and safety policies.
- Demonstrates clear communication with the healthcare team and understanding of cultural diversity and workplace safety.
- Supports department-based projects and quality initiatives. Documents in the medical record as per procedures.
- Achieves and maintains competency in advanced skills (e.g., phlebotomy, IV removal, 12-lead EKG, NG tube management).
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must have one of the following:
- 1 year of general healthcare experience
- 6 months as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency within 120 days
- Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training with at least one clinical rotation
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.
- Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class. Successful completion of basic information system training.
- Microcomputer experience preferred. Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- EMT or Paramedic certification or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
- Medication access limited to distribution to the nurse.Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
