Description:
TITLE AND SALARY WILL BE DETERMINED BASED UPON EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE.
The Patient Care Technician provides routine patient care and departmental support following established policies. They perform core nursing assistant duties, including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients), point of care testing, weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, and HAC & PSI prevention. Additional tasks include simple dressings, restraint management, bladder scans, specimen collections, and ticket to ride. They must achieve all required competencies and maintain or perform advanced skills such as phlebotomy, IV removal, Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12 lead EKG, and NG tube management based on departmental needs.
Responsibilities:
- Suggests and supports departmental changes. Assumes responsibility and views problems as challenges.
- Demonstrates awareness of behavior on department efficiency. Supports projects and quality initiatives
- Performs core nursing assistant duties: ADLs, testing, vital signs, monitor application, prevention measures, dressings, restraints, scans, specimen collections.
- Reports equipment malfunctions. Establishes effective communication with other departments.
- Maintains professional and respectful relationships. Contributes to unit activities: call lights, phones, meal trays, transporting patients.
- Receives feedback constructively. Identifies and communicates learning needs.
- Takes action to improve skills and performance. Requests planning and prioritizing assistance as needed.
- Participates in self-review. Communicates effectively with the healthcare team.
- Understands cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment. Supports workplace safety for patients and self.
- Develops productive working relationships. Assists with patient care and therapies.
- Provides feedback to RN and reports patient status changes
- Instructs patients and families under RN’s direction. Applies, monitors, and removes restraints per protocol.
- Adheres to patient care policies and safety procedures. Documents in medical records timely and accurately.
- Completes clerical functions as needed. Performs in line with system-wide competencies.
- Achieves and maintains advanced skills: phlebotomy, IV removal, Foley catheter removal, arrhythmia, EKG, NG tube management.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Enrollment in a Nursing Program with:
- 1 year of general healthcare experience
- 6 months experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion
- Completion of at least 1 nursing program clinical rotation required
- Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class upon hire
- Successful completion of basic information system training
- Microcomputer experience preferred
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
- Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse
