PAYROLL & BENEFITS ANALYST – OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Manager, Human Resources, the Payroll & Benefits Analyst is responsible for processing the organization’s hourly and salary payroll and administration of the company’s benefits programs. Accuracy and time management skills are key in this role, as well as a working understanding of all applicable laws and regulations. This is a full-time permanent role (40 hours per week) located in our downtown Calgary office. This position qualifies to work from home up to one day per week.

Responsibilities:

The Payroll & Benefits Analyst acts as the subject matter expert for all things pay & benefits within the Human Resources team and as a pay & benefits resource for all employees across the organization. Additionally, this position acts as a general resource within the Human Resources team and will be involved across a variety of Human Resources processes and projects.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Full-cycle payroll processing for 4 pay groups; 1 salary and 3 hourly union payrolls.
  • Interpreting and actioning Collective Bargaining Agreement terms related to pay, allowances, progression, etc.
  • WCB and Employer Health Tax administration, reporting, and payment calculation.
  • Administration and calculation of vacation programs and other exception pay transactions such as banked OT, sick, STD, and other leaves.
  • Work closely with Treasury to ensure that cash forecast is up to date with payroll and other benefits pre-authorized debits.
  • Payroll accounting, including Journal entries, distributing and preparing payments, benefits, taxes, and payroll deductions.
  • Processing new hires, employee terminations and employee status changes in both Payworks (payroll system) and third-party benefits systems.
  • Maintaining and updating payroll & benefits records and ensuring all data input files are complete for processing in Payworks.
  • Retirement plan administration, including enrollment in and termination from company Pension, RRSP and TFSA plans, contribution rate changes, etc.
  • Creating and/or running regular and custom ad hoc reports from Payworks as requested for internal auditing and reporting.
  • Reviewing and optimizing current payroll & benefits processes to realize and action efficiencies and investigating and resolving payroll issues as required.
  • Acting as the single point of contact for employee queries on payroll & benefits and resolving inquiries and requests from auditors or external service providers.
  • Acting as time and attendance system administrator and provide ongoing system training to managers and employees as required.
  • Reviewing and validating overtime, shift payments and union pay codes.
  • Preparing employee change letters, employment verification letters, and conducting year-end T4 reconciliations and filing.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.
