KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Relevant knowledge acquired through the Personal Support Worker certificate program.
• Computer knowledge ie: computer charting and e-mails.
• Ability to operate basic medical equipment; required to assess patient vital statistics and condition (ie: thermometer, stethoscope, blood pressure apparatus, blood glucose monitor, scissors, simple suction equipment, stretchers, etc).
• Knowledge of universal precautions and how to use personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect self, the clients and their caregivers from the transmission of infections.
• Knowledge of body mechanics and ability to assist clients with transfer using transfer belts, mechanical lifts, and one-person or two-person assisted transfer.
• Knowledge of the importance of traditional healing methods as well as community and cultural practice.
  Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
  The completion of a Personal Support Worker program, or equivalent education; or if no certification, must have one (1) year of work experience with a minimum of 1000 hours providing care in long term care or home and community care settings and be able to complete a PSW course within five (5) years of hire.
  Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  Additional Requirements
  Proof of immunization in keeping with current public health practices is required.
  Valid Drivers license.
  NTHSSA Requirements

Within the NTHSSA, the Personal Support Worker must be able to acquire within a reasonable time frame and remain current with the following training and certifications:

• Back Care or safe lifting course
• St. John Ambulance Health Aging Course
• Standard First Aid
• Current CPR
• PSW Pharmacology certification for Home and community service only
• Ostomy care for PSW
• Fire Safety Training, including Fire Extinguisher training
